SUNDAY, JUNE 1, 1924. f M , Brake Squeals and Howls Easily Stopped. + When you apply the brakes, docs your car come to a quick, smooth noiseless stop, or does it stop with &® successivn of screeches and how!ls, Brakes that screech, howl anc chat- ter when applied can usually be made to operate quietly and effi- ciently if you will take about half ‘an hour to give them a little atten- tion. To find out what is causing the noise, examine the brake lning. Last week in showing you how to ndjust the brakes, I described how to test the clearance between the brake band and the drum, If you have allowed mcre space betwer the band and the drum at one sidy than you have on the other, it ia al- most certain that your brakes will Squeal when applied. The clearance must be the same all round, about the thickness op a visiting card be- tween the lining and the drum, If the ci ance appears to be all right, then you will have to remove the brake bancs and examine them. If you notice that the lining has worn more on one side than on the other, you can be almost certain that. you have found the trouble. ‘The cause for uneven wear in the brake lining may be due to a bent band or improper adjusting screws. If you are not sure about how to adjust the brake bands, refer to the article gn brake adjustment last week. BRAKE LINING DEFECS If the lining appears to be bear- ing on the drum equally all round notice if the rivets are properly countersunk. The heads must be be- low the top of the lining. If the rivets come up level with the top of the lining, they will cut the brake drum und certainly cause squeals and squeaks. In apy case if you find that the lining is worn so badly that the rivets come up to the top of the lining, it is better to have the brakes relined. This is a feb that should be done by a mechanic. A good mechanic can Go the job very quickly and at a small cost. 1f however, tho rivets are well countersunk, and the lining appears ‘to be bearing equally all round, then you still have a lat of life left in the band, ant the noise is probably due to dirt or grit on the surface of the ning. If the brakes are operated in a yery harsh manner, the lning may be slightly burned or glazed. In either ‘of thewe cases, the rem- edy is simple. ‘Take a stiff wire brush and some gasoline and scrub the lining thoroughly. If you do not posséss a wire brush, then wash the band with gasoline and roughen the surface with the edge of a file ‘to remove the glaze. Other noises that come from the brake mechanism are caused by loose brake rods or connections. Sometimes a brake rod goes very near some part of the chassis and when the car is running the vibra- tion causes it to rattle against the chassis. It is a good idea to get a piece of light spring and attach one end to the brake road away from the part it now strikes, All defective brakes do not squeal apd squawk and howl when ap- plied, but unfortunately will not stop the car within a reasonable distance, In this case if the lin- ing itself is not worn out, the trou- ble may be caused by oil or grease on the lining. After you have cleaned the lining, look for the cause of the trouble. ‘This will generally be found to be a worn felt wasites on the axle shaft al- lowing the grease to creep through and get on the wheels and lining, and a new felt washer wi!l gener- ally cure the trouble.
