SUNDAY, MARCH 16, 1924 OLDS BODIES NOT SHIPPED Fisher Is Now Making Them in Unit of Olds Plant. Another step toward becoming a wholly self-contained automobile fac- tory was taken by the Olds Motor Works this week when its production line and that of the new Fisher Body Corporation's plant in Lansing Mich., were joined and the first ved tar body moved through the archway separating the two build- ings. The Olds Motor Works now is one of the few automobile factor- fes in the world where all of its bodies are built at the same place the chassis and engines are manu- factured. The change eliminates the ship- Ping of Oldsmobile closed bodies to Lansing, and removes any chance of the bodies being damaged in shipment. It also will permit an enlarged produc*ion schedule which fs badly peeded to meet the big de- mands for the new Oldsmobile Six. Last November the Fisher Body Corporation, in conjunction with A. B. C. Hardy. president and general manager of Olds Motor Worka an- nounced that the Fisher ut;aniza- tion would take over a ern three-story unit of the Olds plant for the exclusive construction of Oldsmobile closed bodies. Engineers and body experts of the Fisher or- ganization supervised the layout of the plant and installation of new ma- chinery. | The finished plant was inspected by Fred Fisher, head of the corpora- tion, last week, and he declared that it was the most efficient plant in the world for the economic and quick production of quality closed , bodies. AUSH FOR CARS 5 OPENED HERE Outlook for Spring Trade Bright With Local Dealer. “This ts the season of the year,” declares R. N. Van Sant, Hudson- Essex distributor,” for robins, light overcoats and the spring rush for 7” motor cars. “From all indications it will be the most insistent rush we ever knew. “In my entire experience as a dis tributor I have never before had so many unfilled orders for cars, This ip despite the tact that we have done a@ wonderful business right through the winter, so that our orders now are by no means an accumulation. “It is the Coach—the Hudson and Essex Coach—which has brought this about. The Coach is right now the one biggest selling factor in the automobile business, The public wants an enclosed car at a moderate price, “The name coach is now . For a long time some persons 2 €d that there was no such thing as a Coach; it was simply a sort of Se- dan. Now the Soctety of Automobile Engineers has recognized the coach, and has defined it as just the sort of body which Hudson-Essex or igingted and which now makes up 75 per cent, or more of Hudson- Essex business. “Everyone knows that the great factor in cutting down costs in auto- mobiles has been the practice of standardizing. Most of this stand- ardizing was done on the mechanism of the cars. Hudson-Essex stand- ardized on enclosed bodies, and thus were able to offer an enclosed car at practically an open car price. “One fact which convinces me that business conditions are basical- ly sound is that the used car market retains a wonderful activity, & fhe Casper Sunday Cridune FLAT RATES FOR REPAIRS ARE ADVISED “I firmly belleve In the fiat rate method of charging for automotive service and it is the method used in our instruction service station,” says Arthur G. Zeller, president of the Michigan State Automobile School, Detroit, “This system is popular with the motoring public as the car owner desiring repairs knows in advance just what he will have to pay for the job when it is ready. “In order to succeed with flat rate prices it is necessary to have proper equipment as well as me- chanics who have been thoroughly trained in thelr work. The service station must keep a very accurate set of records in order to work out @ flat rate schedule. Of course the flat rate is up to the public. If the motorists of America insist upon it, eventually most service tsations will come to the flat rate. | “Unfortunately the public does not always demand the things best for | them but in the matter of flat rates = for autoraotive service they seem to BROCCO [9 be demanding it more every day.” © dy eae ‘ | psec. 0+. adalat bed Marce!
