SUNDAY, 4, 1923 Theatricals :-: POLA NEGRI'S NEW FILM, “THE CHEAT’ AT Lal FOUR DAYS, Incontestably a screen master- Piece, it is said, George Fitz maurice’s Paramount production, “The Cheat,” presenting the famous ae Pola Negri, in the finest role of her picture career, will be the feature attraction at the Rialto theater today, Monday, Tuesday and ‘Wednesday. Jack Holt, Paramount star, is featured as leading man, while Charles de Roche, the popular French screen star, now a member of the Paramount Stock company, heads the supporting cast. It is one of few pictures in which this cele- brated star has appeared, that has a happy ending. Jack Holt Featured. The production is by George Fitz- maurice and Ouida Bergere wrote the scenario. Jack Holt plays the featured role of a husband in the picture. Charles de Roche, cele- brated French actor, is in the sup- port as a white man crook posing as an East Indian princa “Two of the greatest dramatic situations ever employed on the screen are presented in the picture —that when Pola Negri as the wife is branded by the spurious prince to indicate that she Is his property; and the courtroom scene, where, in order to save her husband from prison for the shooting of the Hindoo prince, which she herself did, the star bares her shoulder and Loses Curls to Play Featured Role in Picture Louise Lorraine was proud of her hair. “tt ts a beautiful shade of brown and was long and curly. Miss Lorraine was cast by Fred Datig, Universal casting director, and Stanton for the leading femi- nine role in “McGuire of ‘the Mounted,” a story of the Northwest Mounted Police in which William Desmond is starred at the Wyoming theater next Saturday. Her role was that of a little French-Canadian girl, Stanton said that she was a won- derful type for the role as she is half French and half Spanish. But he wanted her to get away from the conventional long braids so often worn by screen actresses in similar roles. It nearly broke her heart, but Louise finally agreed to part with the curls. ‘The studio hairdresser wielded the shears. She laid the curls neatly in a row on the dress- ing table and Louise cried. At last Louise shook her head and no curls brushed her cheeks. The result was startling. The pretty little actress was even more captivating than ever. She played the role with bobbed hair and all of her friends around tho studio and In Hollywood persuaded her to keep her hair shorn. But Louise looks at her pictures of days before her hair was bobbefl and shakes her head. “Those curls friénds,” she said. were my best designed by Howard Greer, are noth- ing short of exquisite—daring, et | conventional and of the most superb materials.
