SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1923. OAKLAND BRAKES ONE OF BIG SAFETY FEATURES OF YEAR ed on enthusiastic endorse- m already received irom police and public safety officials in the cities and towns which have already \,been visited by the Oakland True 19 Travelers, Oakland four wheel brakes are destined to be recognized as one of the greatest safety fea- tures ever Incorporated in a motor car. The True Blue Travelers are the first models of the 1924 Oakland Ine to come out of the factories at Pontiac, Mich., and so confident were the factory officials of the performance of the new models on which experimental work has been conducted for two years, that the first cars were dispatched to all points of the compass to demon- strate the performance under every road and climatic condition. One of the main reasons for dis- hing the cars was to demon- e the safety feature of the ur-wheel brakes, and in order to 4o this thoroughly, it is planned to offer a demonstration to police de- partment officials in the more than 1,000 cities and towns through which these cars pass, As it is well known that the amount of braking power {s gov- erned by the friction resistance of the tires against the road, by dis- Ps uting the braking effort over all four wheels. Shades of all the ripsnorting broncho busters and all the untamed mustangs. The curtain falls on the Wild and Woolly West. Riding now is included in the “How-To” sertes. The Eastern “dude” sneaks out to the West and earns the cowboys’ tricks in a week. It's not fair, but it’s true, An old cowboy down near Cody sobbed himself to sleep last week as there came to his attention “Notes Riding,” issued for the edifica- um of “Dudes” by a famous Dude Ranch near Yellowstone National Park, * “Pretty soon those Wall Street irds will be running us out of our jobs," he sata. But the Dudes got a lot of good but of it, and catechized each other on the fine points of horsemanship. It is impossible to lock the front wheels on a dry pavement, The tendency to skid has been Practically eliminated because the whole tendency of the car {s not to jskia but to continue going forward in the original direction of travel. Even on @ wet pavement this holdy true. The four wheel brake mechanism on the front wheels has been so ar- ranged that in turning, the outer front wheel brake is automatically | released which insures perfect con- trol of steering at all times. This means that even in turning a cor- ner at high speed, when it is neces- sary to apply the brakes, there will be no danger of skidding. The brakes are easily accessible, being of the external contracting type and the only adjustment neces- sary being at the bands. The use of demountable disc stee) wheels on all models greatly facill- tates any adjustment and also sim- |plifies the work of changing tires. The prices on the new models have been reduced from $30 on the roadster to $150 on the five pas- Senger sedan, making Oakland the lowest priced six cylinder car with four wheel brakes on the market. where for several hours, please do not forget about feed and water. “Approach your horse slowly. quietly and always to his left shoul- der, Keep away from his heels. Lead your horse a few steps before mounting—this is the common cus- tom. “Mount and dismount only on the jleft side of the horse. These move- and both are best accomplished through exercise of good balance rather than strength of arms. Do not mount without a firm grip on |the reins, and never release them while riding, except to change from hand to hand. “After a Mttle practice, spurs or @ quirt are desirable in the riding equipment and the horses are gen- erally accustomed to them. Both, however, should be used with judg. ment. Do not strike your horse over the head or neck, but always on the flank. A very common error of be sinners is to strike the horse to urge him ahead, and at the same time pull up on the reins, which is the only signal he knows to “stop.” The westera saddle horses are not familiar with the use or meaning of “wnoa” or “get up.” The latter statement expressly dis- Proves the authenticity of the song about a cowboy recently sung on Broadway in which he spoke to his horse in terms of “Giddy-ap, giddy- ap, giddy-ap, whoa.” —————».__ Mr. Willis notices a distinct Pick- up in storage customers as the cold weather comes on. You can pay several hundred dollars more than the Light-Six price and get a car that represents no greater, if as great, intrinsic value as the Studebaker Light-Six. Oryou can pay about the same price as the Light- Six, or less, and get a car thatis high-priced when compared with the Light-Six because it does not rep- resent as much forthe money invested.
