PROTECT PUBLIC MONEYS INPITTOBURG Joy Riding In Cars at Taxpay- ers’ Expense Stopped by City Owned Cars PITTSBURGH, Pa., June 30.— Forty high priced passenger cars “Ienocked down under the hammer”. This has been the city of Pitts: brugh's most effective blow at munt- cipal extravagance. Joy ‘riding at the taxpayer's expense has been brought to a summary end through the abandonment of city-owned pleas- ure cars. In thefr place public taxt- cab service has been adopted, with .| the result that a saving of more than $100,000 will be effected during the current year, according to Mayor William A. Magee. Early in January the innovation was instituted largely in the way of an experiment, so the city-owned au- tomobiles were placed {n storage. To serve in their place the city council voted an appropriation of $25,000 for cab hire, which 1s $5,000 less than last appropriation for the maintenance of city automobiles. After only five months the new plan has worked out so satisfactorily that the city council has “burned thelr bridges behind them” by sacri- ficing their cars for the best price obtainable, According to @ recent statement by N. Jones, secretary to Mayor Magee, the total expense for cab hire during 1923, will not exceed $18,000. This first direct saving to be put on the credit side of the comptroller’s ledger was only a beginning. The gross investment in 44 cars used by city employes has averaged $110,000. Annual interest on this sum at six per cent is $6,600, which was a direct loss to tho taxpayers. figuring depreciation on the rolling er cent per year, which, is the allow: je in the District f umbia a nd lower than average, more {s added to the savings rs RB. ount. In addition to these sums, 21 us chauffeurs, mechanic ind miscellaneous labor, were lopped off the city payroll with a conse t saving of $36,000 a year in Adding to this such incl- dental expenses as garage rent, light, fuel and similar charges, together with costs not properly charged against the operation of the cars, the grand total reaches the stage num of more than $100,000, ac ing to figures supplied by J.
