Colon, Dec. 19 —The United States c. uiser Atlanta, Commodore Turner, has ieturned here from the gulf of Darien, Oo the way, on December 15, she overhauled a Colombian schooner with troops aboard. The Atlanta also discovered 500 Colom- bian troops in camp on the western side of the gulf, west of the Atrato river. The American commander landed a party of marines. The Co- lombian commander protested ayainst its presence and refused per- mission for them to proceed farther. Thereupon the Americans returned to the Atlanta The Colombians carefully and sys- tematicully made efforts to avoid furnishing any information as to what purposes had brought them to the guif, or whither they were build ing a road toward the republic of Panama. The pen be- longs to Minister Quesada, Now that the bill has become law, question of great interest has arisen namely, the effct of the reduction of the duty on Cuban sugar upon im- portations of sugar from other coun- tries. The British government has served formal notice on the state depart- ment chat under the favored nation clause it expects that British sugar from the British West Indies shall be admitted into the United States on equal terms with Cuban sugar, and it is not doubted that Germany, France, Austrin and the other great beet sugar producing countries will do likewise. Japan May Send Troops to Korea Fokio; December t9.—From sources deemed unimpeachable, it is learned to-night that the dispatch of troops of Japan to Korea is imminent. Theelder statesmen have been sum- moned to meet the emperor to-mor- row for a conference. The gravity of the situation cannot be overestimat- ed. i The conference of the elder states- men, including the Marquis Ito, and the cabinet ministers resulted, sc cording to & semi official statement, in a determination to oppose a strong front to Russia, in view of the latter’s unsatisfactory reply to the Japanese proposals. The situation is considered grave Even the most sober section of the Japanese press declares it is high time for action. ‘ CHINESE PREPARE FOR HOSTILITIES London, December 19.—The Shang- hai correspondent of the Daily Tele graph eays that according to local mandarins the Pekin government has again warned the provincial authorities to prepare for immediate hostilities, owing to the offensive ac- tion taken by Russia and her allies regarding far East affairs. 6 WS Chia signatire is on every box of the genuine ive Tables the remedy that curea a cold tn one day firmed. Wants Christmas Abolished. Kansas City World. It always happens. Every year somebody bobs up with a proposi- tion to abolish Christmas. Cruiser Atlanta Locates Army} Last year it was the Ministers’ union of Hamilton, 0., that wanted Santa Claus banished from the churches because he is & theatrical imposture. This year it isa preacher in New York state who says that Christmas has become “completely secularised” an occasion for extravavagance and overwork, a weariness and reproach to religion. “Better abolish the festival,” he says, than make it asemi-pagan sat- urnalia.” It is charitable to assume that these clerical kickers have mistaken sluggish livers for consciences. It is quite possible that Santa Claus with his sweet traditions, re- dolent of brotherly love, charity and the impartial love of the Universal Father of us all, has done more for the promotion of real religion than have all the preachers in the world. Take Santa Claus and the spirit, sentiments and emotions he stands for out of the world for a aingle gen eration, and the true message of Christ would become incomprehensi ble to the indifferent human mind, Too many ministers of the gospel belong to that large class who look upon religion only as the means by which one secures the eternal salva- tion of hisown soul, Any meaning beyond that is blank to them, Real, blood-warm, heart-deep sym- pathy with and love for humanity such as is represented in and aroused by Santa Claus at Christmas time— the sacrifice without hope of credit, the giving for the mere sake of the blessed joy of giver and recipient— are all an ‘imposture” and a “semi pagan saturnalia” in the mind of that narrow, incarnated selfishness Which seeks in religion only the eal- vati: n of its own stingy little soul. Santa Claus may be an “impos: ture,” but the joy he brinvs to mil lions of little hearts is genuine. Christmas may be a “semi-pagan saturnalia,” but it mellows the hearta of millions of men. The world cannot afford to lose either, Nor will it. There’s a charm in the name and a spell in the air that exhilarate youth as nothing else can and bring back to old age the virgin emotions of childhood. Its spirit is holy, its tra ditions enobling and its sweet sup-r- stitions are sainted. Every instinct lying at the source of man’s moral nature requires that there be a time in the year when for a few brief hours self may be forgot- ten, when the heart may turn tender and the coarse passions soften, friends may be drawn more closely and enemies forgiven, peace may de- scend upon us and theglad soul revel naked in the glorious benediction of the yuletide glow. A semi pagan saturnalia, indeed. It was a pagan saturnalia once, While the Christ were yet unborn, our sun-worshiping ancestors, ac- cepting the perceptible lengthening of days at this time of the year asa triumph of their god over the hosts of darkness, instituted this festival of magnanimity and merrymaking, and it has descended through the centuries, the growth of human knowledge and sympathy adding to its beneficsnce and the graces of re gions perfecting its beauty, until it is a festival that knows no creed, no clime, no age, no people, but is the glad jubilee of all humanity, as na- tural as it is beautiful. There's Money in Bee Calture. Mexico, Mo., Dee. 19 —A. C. Cal- leau, of Victor, Monroe county, de- clared before the State Beekeepers’ association this afternoon that the honey crop that went to waste in his county this year amounted to more than the corn crop. He said he had ninety-three colonies and had sold 10,006 pounds of honey. This brought him about $1,250. He thought bees would be a source of great profit to Missouri farmers. He said the growth of white clover this year promised a big honey crop next year.
