Post-Diepatch Bureau, 1845 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, Dec, 12 —The gloom over the presidential situation is deeper and blacker to-day than it has been at any time this week The committeemen talk like parrots for Roosevelt, but not more than two or three of them are for Roose velt at heart, They are all for Han- na, They want Hanna, but they do uot see how they can get him, There was no enthusiasm for Roose- velt to-day, and there has not been any this week, The committeemen are resigned, however. They contemplate with equanimity the possibility for four years in the White House for a Democrat, and hope the Democrats will nominate some good, conservative man. The President showed his nervous ness and anxiety to-day in many ways. He cross questioned all call ers on the feeling of the committee, and plainly indicated by his manner that he is worried. Roosevelt is no child in politics. _| He is not fooled by glowing eucom- iums of himself from mon he knows are not really his friends. He thinks he will be nominated, but he fears for what will happen uf ter he is nominated. Besides, there is always the Hanna undercurrent, That has not been stemmed yet. Hanna boomers are voth of the open and secret kind and, while Hanna insists stoutly there is nothing in the talk of nominating him, there is much conniving and scheming going on. ~ It will be six months before the convention. If a plan to shelve Roosevelt without being laid opentu the cry of treason can be fixed up, it will be, Thero is not much hope of it, but efforts will be continued and Mr. Roosevelt will have many nervous days between now and the conven- tion. As the Republican situation stands now, Roosevelt will be the candidate and he will be sacrificed at the polls. Better four years of Democracy with ‘a Republican party in good shape than four years of Roosevelt, with a wrecked and disorganized party is the philosophy of the R-pub lican leaders. Better yet, of course, to have Han naand victory, but thatcontingency is not worked out yet, and it is not likly to be, although that does not mean that serious effort will not be made. Revolution Imminent. A sure sign of approaching revolt and serious trouble in your system is nervousness, sleeplessness, or stomach upsets. Electric Bitters will quickly dismember the trouble- some causes. It never fails to tone the stomach, regulate the kidneys and bowels, stimulate the liver and clarify the blood. Run down sys. tems benefit particularly and all the ueual attending aches vanish under ite searching and thorough effective: ness. Electric Bitters is only 50c, and that is returned if it don’t give satisfaction. Guaranteed by . L. Tucker, druggist. Mr. Bryan Saw the Pope. Hardware and Grocery House, Famous New England Story on the Stage. About three years ago “(Quincy Adams Sawyer,” a story of New En- gland life by Charles Felton Pedgin, made its appearance in attractive { book form and achieved enormous popularity. The parties concerned in the book saw in the story all the elements of @ successful play. It the book was successful, the play was doubly so. “The very best New England play ever seen’’ was the universal verdict. The play closely follows the book. ‘ Quincy Adanjs Sawyer” isa wealthy young Boston lawyer. who goes into thecountry for his health. He meets a blind girl whose love he wins. Their courtship is the main theme of the play, but it is not on any onefeature of the drama that interest centres. It is the realistic portrayal of char- acter and scene that has won the play ite distinction. The play is equally popular every- where. In New York last season where it ran for five weeks the capac- ity of the Academy of Music was taxed to its utmost.
