Gulson, Pastor, AT THE MOVIES Una Merkel Cast as Benny’s Better Half Comedy, thrills and romance were combined last night at the showing of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's “It’s in the Air,” now playing at the Para- mount theatre, to cause the audience to thrill, chill and shrill with delight. Jack Benny, public hero of the air waves, was definitely established as one of the screen’s ace comedians by the enthusiastic audience. As the Broadway “chiseler” who loses his wife because of his shady dealings, but wins her love again and becomes a national hero by making a record- breaking stratosphere flight, Benny turned in a sterling performance. Una Merkel, as Benny's wife, showed her forte as a dramatic ac- tress. Ted Healy and Nat Pendleton were superb in their respective roles of the “confidence man’s” side-kick and the’ comical “G-Man,” Mary Carlisle, as the flapper vamp Who at- tempts to win Benny from his wife, Harvey Stephens and Grant Mitchell al] turned in excellent performances. ‘The fast-moving plot concerns the adventures of Benny, the “chiseler,” 1 Superfluity.of Wives ; Lands Moore in Cell Thrilling Naval Film Features Dick Powell The thrill and romance of naval officers in the making, men who in peace or in war, heroically brave death for their country in their line of duty, is colorfully depicted in the new Warner Bros-Cosmopolitan drama- with-music, “Shipmates Forever,” which is scheduled as the feature at- traction at the Capitol theatre, Sat- urday, Sunday and Monday. It is an intimate and _ revealing story of the lives of the midshipmen in their study rooms at Annapolis, on the parade grounds and their cruises at sea. It pictures them at work and at play; their loves and their laugh- ter; their loyalty and their courage “under fire.” Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler head the cast. Dick personifies the raw cadet, somewhat spoiled but with the makings of a man, who is whipped into shape as a gallant officer through the rigor of the Naval Academy train- ing, and Ruby the loyal daughter of the Navy. Dick sings; fights a bitter battle alone with himself and finally winds up as a hero who dashes through scalding steam and flame to rescue a shipmate. Ruby dances to gay throngs, the while she fights desper- ately to win the man she loves to the traditions of the Navy. HAAS SUCCEEDS MUENCH Washington, Nov. 8—(#)}—The Rev.
