GRAND JURY WILL WORK EXTRA WEEK PROBING POLICE Purity Squad, Under Jury’s Or- ders, Raids Suspected Gambling House Minneapolis, May 1—(®)—The Hennepin county grand jury Friday was granted an extension of one week to continue its investigation in- to charges of police corruption and U protection in Minneapolis. e following developments in the anquiry arose Friday: ‘The putity squad, under grand jury orders, raided a suspended gambling house and arrested 19 men. The grand jury opened investiga- tion of mysterious substitution of wa- ter for @ large quantity of moonshine seized by police several months ago It was indicated there would be more indictments resulting from a purity squad raid ona disorderly house Tuesday night. Jules Gustafson, indicted former head of the purity squad, charged the indictment brought against him was motivated by grand jury anger at his refusal to testify before the body, in a motion to quash the in- dictment in district court. The grand jury continued its scru- tiny of bank accounts of four city of- ticials and police officers. Patrolman J. R. Dickinson, who led the Purity squad raid on Tuesday and who has been a frequent witness before the jury, was suspended from the police force for 90 days. Records of more than 25 banks have been searched so far and five bank accounts of these four men have been located. Several months ago, police seized a quantity of moonshine. They stored it over night in police headquarters, and the following day delivered it to the purity squad. At the time it was reported water had been substituted for the moonshine. Judge Mathias Baldwin Friday took under advisement a petition by Gus- tafson to quash the indictment charging him with wilful neglect of duty, Captain Fritz Ohman Friday sus- pended Patrolman Dickinson for 90 days, pending a hearing before the civil service commission. Captain Ohman said he would charge that Dickinson had confiscated a gasoline coupon book from a man found in the discrderly house Tuesday night and that Dickinson had afterwards used this book to obtain gasoline for his own automobile. Pat Page Proves He Is Able Moundsman Chicago, May 1—(P)—Pat Page, University of Chicago baseball coach, who has a son old enough to play football for the Maroons, still has something in his left arm. Chicago played a practice game with a semi-pro team Thursday and Page ran out of pitchers. He went to the mound himself in the ninth inning and retired the opposition on six pitcned balls, and allowed only ‘one hit. one of the greatest of Maroon athletes, had opportunities to try for major league pitching jobs, but pass- ed them up to remain at Chicago as an assistant coach. South Dakota Man Named by Woodmen Duluth, May 1.—(P)—John Treweek, Lead, 8. D., Friday was elected head consul of the Tri-State camp of the ‘Woodmen of the World at the closing session of the biennial convention here, Treweek, head advisor of the organization for two years, William J. Hiland, St. Paul. ‘Wahpeton, N. D., was selected as the convention city in 1933, dates to be selected later. Members of the state circle elected officers Thursday night. Delegates from Minnesota and North and South Dakota attended the two-day gathering. . DISMISSAL PLEA DENIED New York, May 1.—(?)—Dismissal of the indictment against directors of the closed Bank of United States was denied by Judge George L. Donellan ‘Thursday. The state closed its case efter 20 court days and the defense will begin Monday. \ Pajama War in Dilworth Ends | Dilworth, Minn, May 1—()}— Dilworth’s pajama war has ended. Students who Thursday indi- cated they would launch a rebel- lion against dresses have agreed to save the fancy beach garb until their studies are completed. Albert Zech, eighth grade in- structor, who, in odd moments participates in the Fargo Elks club boxing cards, said no girl would sit in his classes with those flapping pant-legs. The girls agreed and were back in school Friday. KING GETS READY FOR EYE OPERATION Prajadhipok Told by Doctor That Both Eyes Are Af- fected by Cataracts Washington, May 1.—(4)—Prajad- hipok of Siam Friday dropped his title as king to return to New York, where he will prepare for an opera- tion on his left eye. He and the queen, however, did not resume their incognitos before their train left Washington. The same of- ficial delegation, headed by Vice President Curtis and Secretary Stim- son, which welcomed him Tuesday, were ready to see him depart. Although his stay in Washington was crowded with official calls and greetings the king found time to go to Baltimore Thursday for an examina- tion of his eyes by Dr. William Hol- ‘and Wilner. Dr. Wilmer, who examined him several years ago while he still was a prince, told King Prajadhipok an operation was necessary to save the sight of his left eye. A cataract over it has been developing for six years. The right eye also is affected by a cataract but the physician said it was not yet ready for surgical treatment. The operation is to be performed May 10 at the Ophir Hall estate of the late Mrs. Whitelaw Reid, by Dr. John Wheeler, assisted by Dr. Thomas A. Johnson. Schedule of Masses At St. Mary’s Changed Attention was called Friday by Rev. Father John A. H. Slag, rector of St. Mary Pro-cathedral, to the change in the schedule of masses at the church, effective next Sunday. The new schedule, which will re- rnain in 2ffect until October, provides for masses at 7, 8, 9 and 10:30 a. m., each Sunday. STATEHOOD BILL VETOED Honolulu, May 1.—(#)—Gcvernor Lawrence M. Judd has vetoed a meas- ure of the territorial legislature ask~ ing congress to authorize statehood for Hawail. He returned the bill Thursday.
