ag rribune’s ). Market Report for ih pay 1 STOCK MART PRICES SENT DOWNWARD BY LATE BEAR THRUSTS 3 u's. Steel, Which Had Been Up @ Point, Breaks More Than Four Points New York, May 1—(P—A quick bear thrust in the last hour sent stocks rapidly downward Friday after prices had risen moderately in the earlier trading. U. S. Steel, which had been up a point, broke more than 4 under Thursday's close. New York Central touched a new low. West- inghouse, Allied Chemical and Case dropped sharply and losses of 1 to 115 Hei d in Consolidated Gas, Amer- ‘elephone, Union Pacific, Gen- | Bethl. eral Electric and Dupont. Saies were under 3,000,000 shares. The ‘advance in the stock market ee its vitality after the violent flurry short covering late Thursday, and the market turned spotty. The bond | lifting of selling pressure. the change of trend represent- | fundamental change in eco- | nomic conditions, it at lcast repre- sented no fundamental change in / economic conditions, it at least repre- sented a growing conviction that troublesome situations had been | smoothed out. The stock market turned hesitant | again in the afternoon, when Pull- | man dropped 3 points in response to its quarterly statement showing net of only 15 cents a share. Bethlehem was firm in the morning, rising 3: points. U. S. Steel fluctuated un- certainly. In the morning upturn, | Auburn surged up 14, but later lost much of that advance. Ailied Chem- | ical yielded most of a 4-point — | Miscellaneous issues selling up points or so were Atchison, Union Das cific, Nash, Gulf States Steel, Johns |p, Manville and Eastman, and gains of | a point or so embraced a wide as- sortment of share Dividend news was in the main re- assuring, although 2 ments apearing were s acter to cause doubts over mainten- ance of rates later in the year. The Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey de- clared both the regular and regular extra dividends of 25 cents a share, although Wall Strect would not have been surprised had the extra been discontinued. Standard of New York also declared its reguiar payment. The $1 quarterly dividend ordered by Bethlehem Steel was better than had been looked for bv the more pes- simistic observers. The week-end business reviews in- dicated little change in generally static conditions. Call money was firm at 1's per cent, as there was considerable loan calling, incident to the month-end setticments. i Potatoes ti CHICAGO - : slow; yound 1 . eked Bliss 1 dium to small, $2.75-3 2.
