SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1928 PAGE NINE Bismarck Demonstration Home Opens Sunday; Public Invited PROPERTY WILL |______FesrianotDemonstatntiome monstration Home BEOPEN DAILY THROUGH WEEK Visitors Asked to Keep in Mind That House Was Built on Economical Basis HOURS ARE 2 TO 9 Furnishing and Labor Saving Devices Being Shown by Bis- marck Dealers Arrai rear are complete for the opening of the Bismarck Home which will be displayed to the pub- lic_ tomorrow. u The home is located at 811 Mandan St., just north of Avenue D, and all residents of Bismarck and vicinity are invited to inspect it during the Demonstration period which will last a week. The house will be open from Z to 9 p. m. daily. In order to give the effect of a home, rather than an untenanted house, the structure has been com- pletely equipped with furniture and other accessories embodying the latest ideas in home decoration and arrangement. Many articles which have rei value as labor savers also will displayed by various business firms. In_ inspecting the home, visitors should keep in mind that it was not designed or constructed as a model home but asa demonstration of how much the home builder can get for his money in Bismarck. Some things have been done in th home with a view to making it tractive for demonstration purposes. The painting in four of the rooms is stippled whereas plain paint would have been just as efficient although not as attractive. The front entrance of the home is approached over four concrete ste} which are both wide and deep. The appearance of these steps will be improved when shrubbery is planted in the corners on. either side of them. Over the front. door is the usual out- side lighting fixture. iy The entrance, or combined porch and sunroom, has four windows in addition to the door and is connected with the furnace so that it may be heated. It will be an ideal place for children to play in the fresh air, either summer or winter, and will be a comfort to older persons as well. The sunroom opens onto the live ing room, almoSt directly oppo: the inside place. This fireplace is made of plaster and is painted to harmonize with the rest of the dec- orations. It is equipped with a gas radiant fire and has four windows. The walls of the living room ara stippled in several colors and. are ~ painted, as is: The dining room, which is longer than it is wide and not very large, is separated from the living room only by a wide arch. Lighting fix- tures in the two rooms are of sii ilar design. A five-lamp fixture has Deen installed in the living room and a three-lamp fixture in the dining room because of the difference in size. The lighting fixture in the sunroom is especially well suited for that place. The dining room also has four windows. Entering the kitchen from the din- ing room the visitor sees an electric refrigerator against the north wall, near the outside door. It is flanked by the kitchen sink and a cupboard takes up most of the space along the west kitchen wall. The kitchen range is against the south kitchen wall, north of the doorway to the dining room, and the southeast cor- ner of the room is left vacant so - that a small working table may be pages The kitchen has two win- 'S. ’ One of the unique features of the kitchen is the pot closet above. the sink. This is designed to make use of the room over the cellar stairway and is half as deep as the stairway is wide. Its use will eliminate the necessity for stooping to obtain pots and pans from the lower shelves of the cupboard. The cupboard was built by the con- tractor and contains ample room for chine, glassware and other kitchen equipment. Plenty of drawer space is provided and a hardwood work- bench is a part of the cupboard ar- rangement. Special attention is called to the manner in which the electric refrig- placed soars tt 2 pearance is that it was particularly desi for the Demonstration Home. Instead it is a stock model and the built-in appearance comes because of the way in which it has been enclosed by molding and other cabinet work. INSURANCE IS PROTECTION TO MODERN HOME Damage from Fire, Wind and Hail Is Common; Type of House Fixes Premium After working and saving to buy a home, the average head of a family wants to be certain that it is pro- ted against damage as completely ie. e has no guarantee against ges of wind, rain, or fire, the intelligent:thing to do is to insure it. Insurance is the only thing which makes sure that dam- age to the house will not be reflected in a heavy loss to the owner’s pocket- book, according to J. P. Wagner, secretary of the Mortgage Investors Security company, which wrote the ed on the Demonstration jome. The value of insurance as protec- tion ‘against financial disaster is demonstrated by the fact that build- ing and loan associations require home owners to carry insurance on properties in which the loan asso- ciation has invested money. _ In such c the loan association holds the insurance policy until its interest in the property is retired. When this is done it turns the in- surance policy over to the home own- er along, with the satisfaction of mortgage, * x ki Except in certain localities insur- ance against flood is not commonly written in North Dakota. Hail damage, however, is common and may be obtained at slight extra cost. Many persons who have never had occasion to collect on fire insurance have collected on their insuarance policies because of hail dama; The type of construction in a house has considerable to do with the remium charged. If the roof is ‘ireproof the house takes one rate, if the walls also-are fireproof it takes a still lower rate. After determining the various factors entering into the rate, the insurance man applies the standard rule supplied by underwriting com- panies for rating such structures and arrives at the amount to be charged. Total destruction of an average home is rare but minor damages occur frequently and the conse- quences of a total loss would be so tragic, in most cases, that adequate insurance is a necessary. Canfield School to Open Monday Canfield Consolidated school will cone again Monday after a recess of three” weeks. The schoolhouse burned down November 26. Although the frame part of the building was entirely destroyed, the 9 foot basement was only partially harmed by the fire, and the school board has had this cleaned and re- orated. A roof has been placed over the structure and it has been divided into classrooms. 3 The building will be used as it is until the end of the present school term, when a new schoolhouse will be erected, d FLOOR CAREIS MADE EASY BY LATE METHODS Liquid Wax Used in Modern Home After Initial Treat- ment With Shellac Care and treatment of hardwood floors is one of the problems which has been made easy for the modern housewife. The floors in the Demonstration home are waxed, the liquid wax be- ing applied after a filler coat and a coat of quick drying varnish shel- lac was applied. In many. homes the floors are var- nished but in the Demonstration Home only the floors of the kitchen and bathroom will be so treated. The reason for this is the fact that wax is affected by water which fre- uently is spilled on the floor in those rooms. Elsewhere in the house, however, wax commends itself because it can be applied to spots as they wear out and the places where new wax has been applied are not apparent. When varnish is , however, it is im- possible to varnish a worn spot with- out, giving the floor a spotted ap- pearance, This is true, painters say, regardless of how carefully the var- nish is brushed out. Electric machines, which may be rented from the Bismarck Paint and Glass company, now are available to the woman who wishes to go over her floors thoroughly. This should be done at intervals in order to keep the floor looking its best. Concrete work on the basement of the Demonstration Home leaves little to be desired. It was put in with the idea of making the base- ment easy to keep clean and was so laid that water drains off the floor evenly instead of leaving some wa- ter stand in shallow pools as is the case in some basements, Modern building practice reduces the cost of home construction by per- |} mitting the work fo go on winter and summer. This enables contractors and others to distribute their over- head costs over the entire year in- stead of a short season and so re- duces the cost. Construction of many homes is going forward in Bis- marck this winter despite the cold weather. Insurance on the home was written by the Mortgage Investors Security | Spe company. Even the casual r to the well- equipped decorating firm learns that these days. Another thing he learns is that the decorator must have a world of pa- tience and a well-developed, though carefully suppressed sense of humor. Decorators have many impulses to chuckle during the course of their day’s work—or they would have if it weren’t for the feeling of sym- thy with their customers which ates of their business brings. Until Christmas MADE EASY BY WEATHERSTRIPS Window Device Reduces Dust and Cuts Doctor Bill by Preventing Colds Hours of dusting and sweeping as well as saving in coal and doctor bills frequently are the result of the installation of metal weather strip- ping in a home, regardless of whether it is old or new. Metal weather stripping is one of the numerous inventions of recent years which make the modern home a thing apart from the home of 20 or even 10 years ago. It is just what its name implies, a metal strip. This strip is attached to the window frame and fits into a metal groove or slot which is laced in the window casing. They are de- signed to fit closely and hence ex- clude air and dust from the home. Special attachments at the top and bottom of each window perform sim- ilar duty there. In this region, where dust fre- quently is carried by the wind, housewives often find that dust has blown through their windows and settled on their furniture. In some cases window sills have been known to get dirty a few minutes after they were dusted. The reason, of course, is that the windows are not wind and dust tight. The metal weather stripping will be installed in the Demonstration Home next spring and will insure a minimum of dust next summer. The work will be done by the American Metal Weatherstrip company for which W. K. LaPaugh, Mandan, is district agent. In winter, of course, the weather stripping saves fuel by preventing the escane of warr. air and the en- trance of cold air. By eliminating drafts it reduces the tendency to- ward colds and influc..za which are common in houses in which the win- out the cold. It also is claimed for weather- strippin’ that it n akes windows eas- ier to open and close than is the case with ordinary windows. ELECTRICITY IS KITCHEN HELP Housewife Now Can Obtain All Kinds of Helpful Devices to Save Labor Nothing has contributed more to te convenience of working in the modern home kitchen than the el tric appliances which now are a’ able. The housewife can obtain elec- tric devices for almost everything, from beating eggs to washing dishes, High among these time and mon- ey--saving items is the electric re- frigerator. It has replaced the old- style ice refrigerator in many homes b.cause of greater convenience and efficiency and because it does for the housewifa many things which she formerly had to do for herself ot sit not do at all. a y maintaining a greater degree of cold under all conditions, the electric refrigerator is the best pre- ventive for the spoilage of food. As a result foods which might otherwise spoil may be purchased in quantity and kept on hand until needed with- out danger of loss. Frozen desserts, which involve considerable work when d old method, are as easy dessert, when an elect ator is used. Sometimes they are easier. Provision for freezing des- serts is made in the Servel Electric refrigerator installed by the Hughes Electric company i. the Demonstra- tion Home. If ice is needed there no longer is need to chip from the block in the old-style refrigerator with conse- quent mussing up of the kitchen floor when ice particles melt. The cubes frozen by the refrigerator are available at onc: and in the form most convenient for use. When the weather makes the practice advisable, the housewife can prepare a meal to be served cold, put it in the refrigerator and spend as much time away from home as sh. wishes.
