DICKS 1305 Front Street Bismarck Estimates ue Repsirs Phone 55: For Prompt Barvice Experts Make Sure That Heat- ing Plant Is Large Enough to Do Good Job Construction and installation of Bismarck, North Dakota furnaces no longer are done by guesswork, according to George Ebert, furnace expert for the French and Welch Hardware company, who installed the Mueller full-front fur- mace in the Demonstration Home. Guesswork methods have gone in- to discard, Ebert said, and the fur- nace dealer who employs them is certain to run into trouble and pos- sibly impair his reputation. When the modern furnace expert sells a furnace he wants to know, first of all, that it will be satisfac- tory. Otherwise he had better not sell it. The furnace must be large enough to do the job which will be required of it and still there is no sense in making it too large. After furnace men fought with these problems long enough they de- vised a standard code for determin- ing the size of furnace necessary. 1 takes into consider n the capacity of the furnace, the and the number of doo dows. Because heat alw: through doors and windo essary to take their s bers into ¢onsiderat i the heating system. The furnace in the Demonstration Home is big enough to give good results and not too big for economy. Need Good Chimney One of the major considerations in a satisfactory furn: installation, Ebert said, is the chimney. The best furnace will not give satisfaction un- less there is sufficient draft to sup- port proper combustion. The chim- ney draws air through the fire, caus- ing: the coal to burn and unless the coal burns there is no heat. It is easier to control th> draft by proper devices th i the chimn sign or of in: The Mueller furnace in the Dem- onstration Home is especially de- signed to burn lignite coal. It has a circular grate which prevents the ashes from clogging the sides of the firebox and th ducing the heat- ing yalue and ing trouble with the fire. Stan 1 grates also may be had. Grate Shaking Easy Free-acting rollers make shaking the grate an easy matter and the grate is so designed that it may be pulled out through the firebox door without the use of tools. The ashpit door and opening and the fire door and opening are surface ground to insure a smoke-tight fit and all cast- ings fit together in deep joints to revent leakage of smoke or gas. hese joints are sealed as an addi- tional precaution. The furnace is designed for a life- time of trouble-free service. Its castings are made of special steel and iron to eliminate warping which often causes a furnace to give trouble. The warping is caused, un- less the castings are made o: proper materials, by the alternate expan- sion and contraction of the metal as the furnace grows hot or cold. A humidifying device insures roper moisture content for the air in the house at all times. It is con- nected with the house water system and works automatically. Many cases of sickness may be traced to poor heating and to lack of moisture in the air. Since this humidifier is automatic it eliminates the factor of forgetfulness by the householder. SKILL NEEDED FOR GOOD JOB OF PLASTERING Stucco Must Be Properly Mixed and Spread on Well-Con- structed Base and num- planning Ask any good plasterer or stucco man what are the elements which go to make a good plastering or stuceo job and he probably will give the same answer as H. A. Larsen, who did this work on the Demonstra- tion Home. It is that he must “know how.” But knowing how implies a number of things. Chief among these, of course, is that the plaster or stucco must be aeeolly gprited. It must be prop- erly mixed in the first place and other factors connected with the work must be right, There are other considerations. fous gh & good stucco man begins his he inspects the foundation on which it is to be applied. The locks and knobs on the outside doors are of dull nickel on a brass base, guaranteed not to tarnish or lose its luster. The inside doors have s knobs. These also are guaranteed to retain their luster. Each has a silver background which is clearly visible. Glass knobs may be had with a tinfoil background but these soon lose their attractive appearance because the tinfoil tarn- ishes. The building hardware for the Demonstration home was furnished by Jarrell Hardware company. All of the hardware was made by Sager. Building hardware is obtainable in many designs but Sager hardware is distinguished by the clear-cut lines and patterns and the extra-heavy metal used, Mr. Jarrell said. Stanley hinges were used in the home and were an advantage to the contractor, since each hinge is ab- solutely square and one hinge was used as a pattern for the mortises throughout the home. This, Jarrell said, is a patented feature not found in cheaper hinges. The hardware for the cupboards also was furnished by Jarrell and comes in a variety of popular fin- ishes to meet varying needs. Nine keys have been provided for the outside doors of the home and any one of them will fit either the front or rear door. By special order the locks made to the same pattern. In homes where this idea is applied to the hardware the householder eliminates the necessity of carrying an extra key. During the demonstration period Jarrell will show, as a part of the furniture of the home, an Ever Ready radio set for which he has taken the agency. The gas water heater in the Dem- onstration Home will insure water of any desired temperature, summer as well as winter. Most homes have furnaces equipped with water heat- ing coils. These were eliminated in the Demonstration Home because of the fact that they are useless when the furnace is not being operated un- less additional heating equipment is provided. Insulation in the walls and roofs of the Demonstration Home serves a double purpose. This winter it makes the house easier to heat and helps maintain an even tempera- ture. Next summr it will prevent heat from radiating through the walls, insuring a cooler home at all times and more restful sleep. ‘Narcotic Queen’ the fact that it has dried iSosen of the dope ring,” police Mrs. June Boyd after she was arrested in Chicago in room stocked with heroin, cocaine and opium valued at $1,000,000, She is here after being taken to New York City to be questioned regard- ant anything thet she‘ knot Stein, Mes Boyd, Chicage agent of Fs.
