Enough are there, however, to make the business of keeping house an easier proposition than it possibly could have been a generation ago. % : Among the many appliances which lighten the housewife’s burden are those for the use of gas. In the model home will be found a Reliable full enameled gas range with a Lorain oven heat regulator, common- ly known as a red wheel. A simple turn of the red wheel permits time and temperacure cooking with 25 different ranges of temperature, making it the most completely con- trolled cooking appliance in general use. Hot Water Available In the basement a Hoffman master storage system has been installed to provide hot water. It is equipped with a device for controlling the temperature which permits a range of heat from 100 to 180 degrees. The higher temperature makes it possible to scald clothes on wash day. . A radiant-fire gas heater is in- stalled in the fireplace in the living room. It takes the place of a coal or wood fire and provides heat at the touch of a match. It also is subject to complete control. Gas equipment which will be shown with the house but which is not a part of its regular equipment includes a Snow White laundry drier which makes it possible to wash and iron clothes within a few hours, regardless of the weather. The drier makes it possible to dry the clothes in an hour. A Simplex Gas mangle also will be | % shown. It makes it possible to do the ironing in one fifth of the time which ordinarily is required. Persons interested in the further use of gas may have a xas refriger- ator which “freezes by heat.” The Montana-Dakota Power com- pany, which supplies gas to Bis- marck, will have a representative at stration week to explain the uses of various appliances and answer ques- tions about them. NOW BUILDING DURING WINTER Cold Weather No Longer Is Bar to Construction; Cost Is Same as in Summer (By The Building Editor) Since the Demonstration Home Project was- launched a number of queries have come to the building editor as to the best time to build. The answer to this, and it isn’t meant to be curt, is whenever the prospective owner gets ready, re- dardiess of whether it is summer or winter. The old idea that building could be done to advantage only dur- ing the warm months has long since gone into the discard. In the larger cities winter has not been permitted to interefere with building for years and the custom of building through the winter is common here. Contractor J. C. Beattie, who built the Demonstration Home, has not been held up because of bad weather in more than two ears. Other contractors also make it_ a practice to work through the winter months. In most cases the basement of the house is dug before cold weather sets in, since excavating is difficult when the ground is frozen. The concrete may be poured in freezing weather, if necessary, by heating the water and taking other precau- tions, although this isnot desirable. With the basement in, however, the framework may be erected anytime and building can proceed, salaman- ders or other heating appliances | ¢ being used to keep the house from fi * The cost of building in winter is about the same as building.in sum- mer. since many contra¢tors will take contracts a little more cheaply then than when the weather is good and work is more plentiful. Offsetting this, however, is the cost of coal used in posting the building while under | $ construction, y The quality of the work is fully ‘as good when done in winter as when done in summer. The plaster dries more evenly and there are other|% advantages, contractors “say, which make up for the inconvenience which cold weather causes.
