Colder. PRICE FIVE CENTS OFF AT DUBLIN THIS MORNING Flyers Should Reach New- foundland About 11 o’Clock Tonight, E. S. T. THREE MEN ARE ABOARD Weather Perfect on English Side of Ocean—Not So Gooll Near U. S. Three men were at grips today with the great air distances of the north Atlantic in another effort to be the first to fly from Europe to America by airplane. At 10 a. m., eastern standard time, the German-Irish crew of the plane Bremen should have reached a point about 800 miles west by south, on the great circle route, of their starting point near Dublin, Ireland. Under normal flying conditions the silver grey monoplane should reach the vicinity of Harbor Grace, N. F., at 11 p, m., eastern standard time, tonight and_its objective, Mitchel Field, New York, shortly after noon tomorrow. Crew of Three Men Two Germ Captain Herman Koehl, pilot, Baron Ehrenfried Gunther von Huenefeld, sponsor and handy-man of the flight, with a young Irish co-pilot, colonel James Fitzmaurice, commandant of the Free State air force, were the crew. The plane took off at 12:38 a. my eastern standard time, from Baldon- nel airdrome. At 2:05 it was sighted by coast guards over Costello, ing travelled the initial 185 miles at an approximate speed of 90 miles an hour, which had been determined as the most economical for the long flight. here was perfect weather for the start and every indication that it would continue favorable for most of the first part of the flight, which is most crucial to a plane heavily loaded with fuel. Conditions on the American side were not so certain. It appeared problematical whether the Bremen would encounter the dis- turbance which passed up the coast yesterday. Makes Perfect Take-off The aviators overcame their first hazard after a breath-taking run of 900 yards. The peculiar under- carriage of the plane had been un- tried with such a heavy load. ‘The plane lumbered down the long run- way through dust clouds, passed a stone wall barricade through a special opening, and took the air. Steamships on the ocean lanes were on the alert for a sight of the plane, but eight hours after it had left the Irish coast none had re- ported it. The Bemen was not equipped with radio, LARGE CROWD AT FIELD WHEN AVIATORS TAKE OFP Baldonnel Airdrome, Irish Free State, April 12.—(AP)—The Ger- man Junkers plane Breman, flown by the Irishman, Colonel James Fitzmaurice, and two Germans, Baron Ehrenfried Gunther von Huenefeld and Captain Hermann Koehl, took off at 5:38 this morning on an attempt to fly to New York. The plane made a perfect take- off, despite fear due to a peculiar under-gas construction and the fact that it was untested with a maxi- mum fuel load, that tragedy might atiend the start. A large crowd containing the fly- ing buddies of Colonel Fitzmaurice, friends, and well wishers from near- by Dublin, gathered for the start. A cordon of soldiers about the runway kept the crowd back from the plane and the flyers. The plane headed straight down the runway just as daylight began to show. It traveled about 900 yards before it lifted lightly to a few hun- dred feet, and turned to the right, disappearing quickly over the moun- tains to the west. It was expected to pass over Kildare, Kings, and Galway counties before heading over Galway Bay toward the open At- lantic. Allow 40 Hours For Trip The plane took off at 5:38 a, m., Baldonne] tirae, which is 12:38 east- ern standard time. The distance be- tween Baldonnel Airdrome and Mitchell Field, New York, is approx- imately 3,000 miles. The flyers ex- pected to take 40 hours on the trip across which would Pa them at Mitchell Field early Friday after- noon. The three appeared at the officers’ mess at the airdrome sho.tly after 4 o’clock. Captain Koehl was first; he started his breakfast without waiting for the other two. Baron von Huenefeld was next, entering the room with monocle in his right eye. He ate a hard boiled egg Fitzmaurice’s chair had back against the table thi he failed to appear the hall became quite silent. (Continued on page two)
