S, Eus- tism chairman of the western passen- ger traffic committee advises William H. Brown & Co. of Chicago and Mott. The matter was taken up during an inter-regional _meeting of the sever- al passenger traffic.committees of the United States recently, says Mr. Eus- tim, and it was concluded that it was inadvisable under “present conditions to resume the practice of ‘making re- duced fares for homeseekers. Mr. Eustis expresses the fear that it might be difficult to discriminate’ between land-seekers and speculators, “or be- tween either of these and the travel-" ers to siate and county fairs and con- ventions.” William H. Brown, president: of the W. H. Brown Co., takes serious excep- tions to Mr. Eustis’ conclusion in a lengthy ‘etter of which copies have been nwiled the press and the com- of the northwest. Mr. ; ls that the stand the rail- ways ha » taken will retard the devel- opment «i the northwest, hold back food production, seriously affect the cemmercial life of the newer north- western states and in other ways have harmful results. He believes that not only should homeseekers’ rates be con- tinued, but that a government imml- gration bureau should be established to aid returning soldiers in taking ad- vantage of these rates to find homes on the cheap lands of the northwest. Louis F. Post, assistant secretary of the department of labor, agrees with this latter contention and advises Mr. Brown that the employment service is being expanded by the labor depart- ment with a view to caring for de- mands from soldiers for openings on the farm. He says the re- port of the escape of Michael Alexdro- vich. brother of the emperor, seems to have better foundation. The Arch Bishop Andronica of Perm has been arrested for complicity in the escape of Michael. The correspondent says he is unable to throw any light on the reported death of Alexis, the former heipap- parent, and adds: “Every time this kind of promin- ence is given the Romanoff family the epople think something serious is afoot.
