The situation on the southern front undoubtedly is in favor of the Ger- mans owing to the rapid transporta- tion of reinforcements to the Cracow front, which might account for Ger- man claims of victory. On the north the German advance upon Warsaw from the Mlawa region has been definitely defeated, but south of the Vistula the German march upon the Polish capital is evidently pro- gressing. The latest Austrian official report claims that Pitikrow and Przedbirz have been taken by storm. Pitikrow is an important railway point on the line of the Russian communications from the Czentschowa front. GERMANY WOULD PREVENT IT Greece and Turkey Reported on Verge of War. Athens, Dec. 21.—Germany is mak- ing every effort to prevent a rupture between Greece and Turkey. ) Relations between the two coun- tries are now strained to the utmost as a result of the arrest of the naval attache of the Greek embassy at Con- stantinople by the Turks. The naval officer was sentenced to death as an alleged spy. The German ambassador at Con- stantinople has been ordered to in- tervene and prevent the threatened execution of the Greek officer. An ingenious Frenchman has in- vented a mower to be fastened to the stern of a launch to clear water courses of vegetable matter. It is the most important gain fol- lowing the battle of the Aisne. For the first time in two months positions in front of Arras are in possession of the allies.
