FOR VALUATION OF RAILROADS Commerce Commission to| Open Offices in St. Paul. WORK WILL TAKE YEARS Large Engineering Force, in Connec tion With Employes of the Carriers, to Fix Physical Value of Lines Cen- tering in the Twin Cities. St. Paul, Dec. 21.—The interstate commerce commission will open head- quarters in St. Paul Jan. 1 for the pur- pose of directing the valuation work now going on along the railway lines centering here. An engineering force of eight or nine men will occupy the offices, which will be in the Lowry building until the new Merchants bank is reading for occupancy. The St. Paul office of the commis- sion will be conducted in conjunction with that in Chicago, which is in charge of Professor W. D. Pence. Valuation work already is proceed- ing on the Great Northern, where it was started several months ago by a large number of engineering crews of the commission, working with the val- uation department of the road, and on the Soo line. The other railways of the Northwest will be ‘:overed as soon as possible. The entire work in this section prob- ably will not be completed inside of five years. The selection of St. Paul as the headquarters for this territory was made because of the importance ot the railway interests here. IGNORANT OF ITS CONDITION Testimony Regarding Morgan’s Pur chase of Railroad. ‘Washington, Dec. 21.—When the in- terstate commerce commission resum- ed hearings here on the financial op- erations of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton and Pere Marquette rail- roads Frederick W. Stevens, repre- senting J. P. Morgan & Co., present- ed testimony to support the conten- tion that operations of Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton had burdened the road with $24,700,000 in financial obligations and sent it into a receiv- er’s hands before the Morgan house bought control of the road for the Erie. At the time of the purchase in 1905, Mr. Stevens said, the Erie directors and the late J. P. Morgan were in ignorance of the actual financial con- dition of the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton and that a surplus of $793,000, the preceding year, had been changed to a deficit of $241,000 through ac- quisition of control of the Pere Mar- quette. FIVE CENTS ON EVERY FARE Minnesota Court Decision Will Cost People $1,000,000 a Year. St. Paul. Dec. 21.—Legal depart- ments of the railways centering here are studying the text of the decision of the supreme court in the test case on the Bendixen 2-cent fare law, and important changes in the passenger tariffs of the lines probably will be made. In its decision the court held that a carrier may charge 3 cents a mile for the first five miles of every passen- ger's trip. and this will mean an in- crease in passenger revenue to the railways of the state of about $1,000,- 000 a year, according to careful esti- mates made by local rate men. Five cents will be added to the cost of every ticket for a trip longer than five miles purchased in Minnesota, if the railway attorneys recommend a literal following of the decision. WILSON DEFIES THE SENATE Wife of Rejected Postmaster Named to Fill Vacancy. Washington, Dec. 21.—The appoint- ment of Mrs. Marjorie Bloom as post- mistress at Devils Lake, N. D., was an additional bomb thrown into the camp of the senate by President Wil- son. Her husband, J. H. Bloom, had been rejected at the last session of con- gress and a few weeks ago Mrs. Bloom was given a recess appointment. It seems assured that Mrs. Bloom’s appointment will be again rejected. It is being opposed again by Senator Gronna of North Dakota. BRIDE LOSES $50,000 GEMS Reward Offered 'in* New York to Finder of Property.
