BIG SHIPMENT OF ARGENTINE MEAT Seventeen Hundred Tons Gon- signed to United" States. New York, Dec. 23.—What will be| the largest consignment ‘of meat ever shipped to this country will arrive here in a day or two from the Argen- tine Republic. This will be the beginning of the concerted effort that is to be made to invade the American market with practically unlimited supplies of dressed .beef, mutton and lamb by the largest independent Argentine meat concern. Every pound of the big incoming cargo already has been sold to butch- ers in this city, Boston and Philadel- phia. The shipment was intended as an experiment and if it proves satis- factory it is the intention of the Ar- gentine concern to establish a regu- lar meat shipping service between American ports and the Argentine, with at least two or three ships ar- riving here every month. Twenty consignees will receive the beef and mutton brought in on this shipment. - The cargo amounts to a little more than 1,700 tons, or 3,400, 000 pounds of fresh meat. It is con: signed to wholesale dealers mostly, although a good part of the cargo has been purchased for retail sale. TO BE USED AS CANCER CURE Mesothorium Proposed as Substitute for Radium. Philadelphia, Dec. 24.—A substilute for radium—mesothorium—which has the same curative action on cancer, will be manufactured here during 1914. Like radium, it is the discovery of Mme. Curie, but has never been pro- duced extensively. Such was the substance of i state- ment by Dr. Harlan S. Miner, analyt- ical chemist for a large manufactur- ing concern. Mesothorium is so. much quicker and easier to manufacture that it is estimated that the world’s supply of the cancer cure will be doubled within twelve moriths. The substance is derived from tho- rium and the company owns large mines collecting this mineral in North and South Carolina. The only radium deposits in the United States are in Colorado. Although Sheriff Smith, now’in sole charge of the man hunt, remains cofi- fident ' that the desperado is either dead or alive in the mine, many be- lieve. he escaped shortly after smudges were lighted on Dec. 1 for the purpose of asphyxiating him.
