Manaos, Brazil, Dec. 23.—A motor launch has arrived here with refugees from the rubber colony of the Terri- tori de Amavon, Venezuela, telling of 173 murders' there in the last few months and confirming stories of atro- cities brought here by Michael J. Gil- leran, an American refugee, who had been ordered to be shot and who es- caped in a canoe, making the trip here through several hundred miles of the Rio Negro. Refugees arriving here tell of a reign of terror and anarchy in the rubber colony. A rebel force has been organized under General Gonzales and all who are suspected of being opposed to him are shot.
