THIS PAPER REPRESENTED FOR FOREIGN - ADVERTISING BY THE @Enclk TON GENERAL OFFICES NEW YORK AND CHICAGO BRANCHES IN ALL THE PRINCIPAL CITIES The local telephone service is get- ting noticeably better there days. We congratulate the management and the Hello Girls. . Sam Gordon might yet make a good running mate for someone. Mr. Eb- erhart would surely prefer someone else, but Mr. Iverson might not be averse to this selection. The two “Sams” would make a good pair and should drive single or double, with or without blinds. Later on somebody will claim the eredit of saving 500,000 acres of swamp lands to the state of Minne- sota. Can any one imagine who that somebody is?—Princeton Union. Yes, the public should easily im- agine who that somebody is and that somebody will have a perfect right to such claims. “Koll’'s Kolumn” in the Cass Lake Times is again being dished out to the readers of that paper. The fact that Koll stopped a run-a-way in Cass Lake recently is not the reason because Koll generall stops every- thing that comes his way. No, we're not speaking of drinks. Laying all jokes aside Mr. Koll and his “Kolumn” will make that paper more interesting if anything and its read- ers will welcome this feature. Not For Chapped Lips. The Presidental boom for Senator Root has had its ascension and quick fall. The slick Senator Gallinger of New Hampshire started it on the Sen- ate floor but a few days ago. The judicial ex-President at Yale prompt- ly sanctioned and seconded the nom- ination them the astute Senator Root himself pricked the bubble by declar- ing that under no wise would he con- sider the Presidency,—(a very wise decision, for he is all too intelligent a man not to know that the people would never accept his candidacy as anything but a stale joke). It was Senator Root and no one else who, as chairman of the last Republi- can national convention, violated every principle of répresentative gov- ernment, ran the steam roller so ruthlessly and defiantly over the free will of the convention that it ceased 'to be serious and ‘became wholly lu- dicrous. It was Senator Root and no one else who reduced the once power-. ful Republican party to so frail a shadow of its former self that it was able to carry only the states of Utah and Vermont. Then to talk of his being the Republican candidate®for President! It was Root and.no one else who made the national Republl- can party so pitiably sick that the Re- publican national committee is now in Washington attempting to arrange for & pre-convention in the hopes that it may resuscitate the elephant enought so that he can again at least stand up on four legs. The oniy thing which the short-lived Root boom shows is that there is still left among the old stand-pat Republicans those who believe that even the elsc- toral vote of Utah and Vermont may be sufficient to wag the whole United |States.—Wisconsin State Journal. i NOTICE All those knowing themselves in- debted to me are kindly requested to settle their book account or note be- fore Jan. 1 1914.
