If hot air would pull stumps, the Bemidji country would look like a piece of prairie—Fergus Journal. —— And We did It Bemidji, where the Northern Min- nesota Development association was born, and where the association had the best meeting in its history, is'out to demonstrate, at the December meeting of the association, that it can come back.—Hibbing Tribune. —— So Will We Some of the editors in this part of the state are protesting the action of the parole board in giving Dr. Dumas the liberty of the state. If over on year in state prison doesn’t have its effect on the doctor, serving out the full sentence wont help any. Take a man of the doctors education and natural ability and while it is sur- prising he ever fell into the ways he did we are of the opinion the punish- ment he already has received will make him a good and useful citizen. ‘We'll bank on the board’s judgement in this case.—Clipper. —_—— Why It Was Beat The Bemidji voters defeated the proposed new charter that would have placed that city in the list of towns goverened by commission form by more than a hundred votes, the proposition carrying only . in one ward. The Pioneer says that the re- sult does not indicate that the peaple of Bemidji are opposed to the com- mission form of government but that they believed the new proposition would not be much of an improve- ment over the present system. The socialists and the present administra- tion were arrayed in opposition and to them the defeat is credited— Brainerd Dispatch. ADMIRAL BERESFORD. Great Sea Fighter Takes Up Cudgels for Irish Unionists. Photo by American Press Assoclation. WILL FIGHT WITH ULSTERITES Lord Beresford Says Home Rule in Ireland Means Civil War. London, Dec. 9—“Ulster will fight. If the British =overnment forces a ciyil and rellglous war on Ireland 1 and many officers and men of the navy will aid Ulster,” Admira.l Lord Charles Beresford declared. England’s great sea fighter has taken up the cudgels of the Irish Tnionists in the fight against home rule. “Ulster makes no claims for the 1est of Ireland,” he said, “but she is terribly in earnest about herself. De- spite the royal proclamation against arms importation into Ireland there are today $8,000 armed men -in Ulster. Soon there will be 160,000. Civil war will surely come if the British -gov- ernment seeks to force home rule on the loyal people of Ulster.” DOWNTOWN STREETS CLEAR Denver fiecaverlng From Recent Ter- ¢ = rific Storm. 3 Denver, Dec. 9.—Denver has thrown off the shackles of the storm. With the downtown section of the city largely made passable, hundreds of volunteer shovelers attacked the trolley tracks in the outlying sections of the city in an effort to reopen street car traffic there. Practically all suffering resulting from the storm has been relieved. A number of poor families are in dis- tress, but subscriptions have been taken for them. T0 WATCH DOMINICAN VOTING .Object of Commlssmn Sent by the United States. ‘Washington, Dec. 9.—The United States does not intend to supervise or interfere with the approaching elec tions in the Dominican republic. A special commission from Washington will merely observe the election as “friendly and impartial spectators.” This was the way President Wilson |’ outlined informally the mission of state department officials now on their way to San Domingo. President Wilson made it clear that the United 3tates had used its good offices in persuading the revolution- ists to lay down their arms on the promise that everything possible, within international right, would be .done by the United States to insure fair elections. <Julia Arthur Is 1.
