Havana, Dec. 8.—The senate has passed the amnesty bill freeing the negro rebels and the former Liberal officeholders of the Gomez adminis- tration who had been charged with various crimes. Some of these men are now serving sentences and oth- ers have not yet been tried. The bill provides for their libera- tion after six months’ imprisonment. It originally was intended solely to benefit the-rebels in the negro upris- ing and when the corrupt civil em- ployes were included the :United States strongly opposed it. E3CAPE IN NIGHT CLOTHES Home of J. J. Hill's Son-in-Law Dam- aged by Fire. ¥ St. Paul, Dec. 8.—The home of Dr. Egil Boeckmann, son-in-law of James J. Hill, was threatened by fire. It started in the ceiling of the basement, presumably from defective electric wiring, burning some of the timbers. The damage was about $100. The fire was discovered by a man passing. by. He called through the window to one of the maids, who awakened Dr. and Mrs. Boeckmann and two other malids.
