Matt Gannon, plaintiff in the famous Spooner townsite case, met death at Baudetteat 9 o’clock Saturday night at the hands of an unknown assassin. He was shot twice, once through the kid neys and once through the knee. He lived 15 hours. County At- torney Loud was notified of the affair yesterday and Sheriff Bai ley left yesterday afternoon for the scene of the crime and County Attorney Loud and Coroner Mar cum left today. The following special was received by the Pio neer concerning the affair: Baudette, April 10—The crisis was brought on by Gannon’s per secuting two innocent parties who were clearing a lot on the Spooner townsite. Gannon struck one for refusing to pay a fine imposed by Justice Kyler. Oune hundred people of the sur- rounding country were present when Gannon approached the two men clearing the lot, and he was invited to leave town before night. Gannon had quarreled with two disinterested parties during the day and drew a gun on them. Gannon used shame- ful language during the day at eyery opportunity. The crowd dispersed before he was shot about 9 o’clock p. m. Saturday night through the kidneys and knee. He lived 15 hours. He was shot through the window of the Hotel Cathcart bar. The people deplore and disavow the act. The perpetrator is unknown. County Attorney Loud stated to the Pioneer this afternoon that every effort would be made to apprehend the perpetrator of the crime. Generally speaking, sentiment througnout the county has been against Gannon, and at Baudette his enemies were num- erous. It was not thought, how- ever, that there would be an av tempt made to end his existence, and no resident of Spooner or Baudette is suspected of having a hand in the affair. TRESPASSERS MUST SETTLE Warrants Qut for Five Viola- tors of the Law in Bel- trami County. STATE AUDITOR IVERSON WILL PROECUTE OFFENDERS. Secret Work Done by Attorney Bevans of St. Paul Results In Big Haul Warrents were today issued by County Attorney Loud for five men accused of trespassing upon state lands, and the papers will be served by Sheriff Bailey as soon as possible. For the present, the names of the men who will be arrested are withheld but will be given out as soon as their arrest has been accomp lished. The issuance of the warrents is the result of a large amount of secret work done by Attorney H. T. Bevans of St. Paul, special at- torney for the state auditor’s of fice, and D. E Elliot, Robert Wil- son and Lafayette Shaw, state cruisers. Mr. Bevans arrived in Bemidji about two weeks ago, his visit be ing ostensibly of a private nature. It has developed, however, that he is connected with the state auditor’s office in the capacity of a special attorney in looking after trespass cases, and the issuance of the warrants for five different . men is the result of his visit. It is claimed that the men accused have been caught red handed and that their conviction of having stolen timber from the state lands is a certainty, The arrest of the timber thiev es is considered a victory for State Auditor Iverson in view of] the recent investigation of the| auditor’s office in connection with' the official acts of former Auditor,| Dann and the present incubent, Mr, Iverson, and show that every effort is being made to pre- BN OO OO ROG N SCUNOO TR ORI Ee0D00BLOUNTRODDBOEE BOBLLABLBOVADOBBEB D,y $8000 worth of Dry Goods, Shoes, Notions, GLASSWARE, LAMPS, ETC.
