'DEFECTIVE PAGE Division of Russnan - One Hundred and Squadron Anchfi%d Fifty Miles North- east of Straits Settlements. - Singapore, Straits Settlement, April 10—A division of the Russian squad- ron which passed here Saturday is anchored off Manki Island, 150 miles northeast of here apparently waiting for the balance of the squadron, which was reported this morning as being near Muatok, south of Java. The whereabouts of the Japanese squad- ron are unknowr. MARRIED YESTERDAY Oren Noble and Miss Tillie Olson of Bemidji Joined in Wedlock. The marriage of Oren Noble to Miss Tillie Olson was celebrated yesterday afternocn at 2 o’clock, Judge M. A. Clark performmo the ceremony. Only a few friends were present. Wm. Brown acted as best man and Miss Nettie Rogers as bridesmaid. After the ceremony had been concluded the party repaired to the Grill restaurant, where an elaborate wedding dinner was served, Both the parties are well known in Bemidji. Mr. Noble holds a responsible position at the store of O’Leary & Bowser, while Miss Olson is employed at ‘the Bemidji Steam laundry: Mr. and Mrs. Noble will make their home in Bemidji. INVENTS A SNUFF BOX C. H. Allen of Blackduck Applies for Patent Upon Novel Device. The latest invention by a north- ern Minnesota man is a contriv- ance for storing and measuring snuff, by C. H. Allen the Black- duck merchant. The device is composed of a square box, the top of which is so arranged that a jar of snuff may be placed upon it upside down, allowing the con- tents of the jar to run into the box. A slot is provided, into which a coin may be inserted after which by the pushing ofa lever the amount of snuff to which the operator is entitled| will drop into a cup on the side; of the box, The contrivance is useful in many different - in- stances. In stores. for instance, it does away with the bother of measuring out the snuff, aman being enabled to walk into the place, put his nickel in the slot and walk ‘out with the right amount in a bag. Mr. Allen has applied for a patent upou the in- vention and has been to seyeral eastern cities explaning the in- vention to the large snuff manu- facturing establishments, and it is claimed that he has received several handsome offers for the patent, Gun Club Shoot. SCHOOL OPENED THIS MORNING Teachers and Pupils Resume Work After Having Spent Week’s Vacation. The Bemidji public schools re- opened this morning after the regular spring vacation. Teach- ¢rs and pupils alike have enjoyed the yacation to the fullest extent, many of the former having spent the week in visiting friends and relatives in different parts of the state. The high school pupils are now preparing for the spring examinations, which will be held on April 13 and 14. Beétfflour’s best. Numerous inquiries hav: been made at this office concerning the service and particularly the conditions under which appli- cants for the position of letter carrier may enter the service. The Postal Laws and Regula- tions provide that the service may be established atany postoffice which produces a gross revenue, for the proceeding year, of not less than ten thousand dollars. In the application for the ser- vice the condition of the sidewalle must be stated, and whether the houses are numbered, the names of the streets posbed up and the city properly lighted. Applicants for appointment as letter carrier will be examined by the Civil Service Commission they must be between 18 and 45; years of age, must weigh at least 125 pounds and be not less than 5 feet and 4 inches in height. The salary will be $600 the first year and if there be two classes of letter carriers promo- tions from the lower to the high. er grade shall be made at the ex- pira,tion of one year’s service, on certificate of the postmaster to the efficiency and faithfulness of the candidate during the pre- The salary will then be $850. Barlow’s Best—flour’s best. Death of Mrs. Benson. Mrs. Mary A. Benson, nee Atcherson, died at Mill Park yesterday afternoon of heart disease of which she had for years been a sufferer. Mrs. Ben- son had been as well as usual until about eight o’clock Satur- day evening. She was born in Trandager county, Ireland and came to this country at the age of eighteen. She leaves three daughters, one in Minneapolis and two at Lisbon, N, D., Mrs. H. B. Hendvicks and Mrs, Far. rell, who are expected here to- mOrrow.
