Horses All Rescued—Catters And Sleighs Licked Up in The Flames. At six o’clock this morning the livery barn of Thomas Newby at 514 Second street caught fire and burned to the ground. The fire caught from a lantern which Mr. Newby had hung in the barn a few minutes before, the lantern having eviden‘ly explod- ed. Mr. Newby came into the barn from an adjoining barn just in time to see the flames leaping iuto the hay from the blazing lantern. Vigorous efforts were made to reach Central in order to turn in the alarm, but hefore this could be done ail the horses and buggies on the first floor were removed. When the department reached the scene, in a few minutes after the sounding of the alarm, the building was a mass of flames, and the building rapidly burned to the ground. Adjoining houses were scorched but prompes attention from the bucket brigade saved them. In addition to the building Mr. Newby loses a large quauntity of hay, one cutter, three sleighs and two buggies all of which | were stored in the second story of the building. . 1 There was an insurance of $1500 on the building, horses | and other stock.
