HITCHCOCK. ‘ntered in the postoffice at Bemidji, Minn., as second class matter. Official County and City Paper SUBSCRIPTION $5 PER YEAR A Challenge. The Pioneer hears that there are republicans in Beltrami couaty who intend to vote for John A. Johnson, democratic candidate for governor. We have been unable to verify this report, as no one seems to be willing to acknowledge it. But we hereby challenge any republi- can in Beltrami county to name one thing which John A. Johnson has done during the years that he has been a public servant in Minnesota that will- entitle him to the yvote of any republican in the state. We should like to know of one public service that Mr. Johnson has rendered to the state. The columns of the Pioneer are open for reply from any re- publican to this challenge. As to State Drainage. When Mr. John A. Johnson, democratic candidate for gov- ernor, was in Crookston last week he devoted a great deal of his speech to demonstrating that he is not at all opposed to state drainage; that in fact, he is a warm friend of the policy. He admitted that he used to be violently opposed to the proposi- tion but pleaded that he had been recently converted. What shall we think of a man who ad- mits that for years, while Robert C. Dunn, his opponent in this campaign, was making effort to secure state aid for drainage in northern Minnesota, he was do- ing his utmost to defeat this same project. What was Mr. Johnson doing all this time? When did he wake up to the fact that drainage was a good thing? Apparently only when he con- ceived a greater political ambi tion and began to see that it would be a good thing for him to get on the popular side, a side which had become popular be- cause Mr. Dunn had espoused it untilits worth was clearly dem- onstrated to all. Mr, Johnson’s record as to state drainage seems to be fairly consistent with his record as to other things. He follows after Mr. Dunn at a safe distance of three or four years. THE trend of public sentiment to Mr. Dunn in southern Minne- sota is well illustrated by the following from the Redwood Falls Gazette: Mr. Dunn was working down through the First district last week, and thelittle wave started there for his opponent met a reactionary wave that did the business. Republicans are com- ing back into the fold and with the gains from the democratic vote which Mr. Dunn is sure to make there is no doubt.of his election. People do” not take kindly to campaign lies abuse, and Mr, Dunnis certain to profit good reason of it. and Cause of Lockjaw. Lockjaw, or tetanus, is caused by a bacillus or germ which ex- ists plentifully in street dirt. It is inactive so long as exposed to the air, but when carried beneath the skm, as in the wounds caused by percussion caps or by rusty nails, and when the ‘air is ex- cluded the germ is roused to ac- tivity and produces the most vir- ulent poison known. These germs inay be destroyed and all danaer of lockjaw avoided by ap- plymcr Chamberlain’s Pain Balm freely as soon as the is received. Pain Balm is an antiseptic and causes cuts, bruises and like injuries to heal injury without maturation and in one- third the time required by the usual treatment. Sold by Bar- ker’s Drug store.
