He had taken the trouble to ascertain who the persons were wio signed that petition, apd found that i) were property hol- ders, the total value of their Lar ynge f being $19.52; 77 were married men, and 20 single; 7 were non-residents, and 10 could not be found after diligent search; 18 of the married men bad no children, and the others who signed the peti- tion had but 26 children in the public schools. He wanted it distinctly understood that he yielded to no man in his respect and esteem for Elvans, asa lady and as a teacher; and the only reason that he would not allow the schools to be closed was, that they had been interrupted so often, and he thought it would be bad to close them in. SH ;) and a fair attendance of members being present. After the reading of the minutes of the last which were: roved, Mr. Kauffmann stated that he had, as he had been instructed, applied tothe proprietors of the various places of amusement in the city for an exhibition for the relief of the poor; the result of which was a donation of $104.90 from the Treasurer of the Skating Park, that amount having been re- crived a8 Monday's proceeds; and a letter trom Messrs. Davenport & Wallack. who said they were gomg away +o soon that it would b+ im- posible for them to comply, snd regretting their mability to do sa. To the stockholders of tne Skating Park a vote of thanks was tendered for the amount contributed. Messrs. Tustin and Dulin were appointed an anditing comuittee for the ensning year. We understand that this course was adopted by the Board of Police so thatthe Justices could be held responsible for the fines collected, ud that the letters were sent to all the Justices of the Peace in the city.
