Hopkins, both of which were referred to the Committee on Examination of candi- dates. ‘The monthly reports of teachers showing the schools to be m_prosperou= condition were read by the secretary Mr. Browa, from the Commirtev on Accounts, t© whom was referred the bill of W. D. Shep- herd, for stationery and supplies, presented the following report: ‘The undersigned members of the Committee en Accounts, to whom was ceferred the bill< of W. D. The market prices were ascertamed by inquiry of respousible dealers of good standing in this city. But in orcer to avoid the possibility of doing Mr. Shepherd injustice, which might arise from ariations in the market rates in qnality or among different dealers, we have im may in- stances thought best to allow hit prices rather above the rates as thus ascertained. Making uniform reductions in accordance with the prices to be al owed as agreed upon, the First District bill has been reduced trom S27 to S208. GS: Second istrict bill from $508.46 to $i77.t; Third District bill from =11871 to $75.5% Fourth District bili from $5.9 19 to $465 Ee Trustee's bill from S165) to $i=.95. ‘Total reduction, irom $2,747.16 to $4.62. It may be proper herr to add that a } portion of the reductions was made on unt of articles charged on the bills, bat known not to have been furnished. Mr. Brown said it was the intention of the comunittee to make a further report, but Mr. Shepherd had asked that the bill be recommit- ted, in order that he might bring in new bills, | with the deductions made. Mr. Whyte said be bad ben y ‘Shepherd, who appeared to be pe barrassed, and he was anxious ill to correspond with the reductions mad by committe Mr. Woodward moved that the billx be ap- proved for $2. the amount approved by se committee. Dr. Walsh thonght it would not be proper to approve the bills at this time; many important a ‘les were not to be found in the schools. In the Third Disirict it appeared that tweaty call bells were ged. and but fifteen conld be found; sixteen sets of Wilson's charis were charged. and but nine could be fou twelve sets of Philbrick’s charts, nly could be found; twent os and thirteen only could be Mr. Johnson said, in regard to the charts, he had ordered a set for each primary school in bis discrict, and they had been delivered at dif- fegent times. He had taken the trouble to ascertain who the persons were wio signed that petition, apd found that i) were property hol- ders, the total value of their Lar ynge f being $19.52; 77 were married men, and 20 single; 7 were non-residents, and 10 could not be found after diligent search; 18 of the married men bad no children, and the others who signed the peti- tion had but 26 children in the public schools. As to the t raised by Alderman Richards, that he (Mr. Ca was to the female schools, he Gesired to say that he was partial to the female schools: and Mr. Richards himseli, who professed to be @ friend of public efuca- tion, was partial to female schools, H* always visited the female schools at examination times, and never visited the male schools, Mr. C. said the charges against him originally were that he did not show pi respect to the memory of Miss Frances Elyans. He wanted it distinctly understood that he yielded to no man in his respect and esteem for Elvans, asa lady and as a teacher; and the only reason that he would not allow the schools to be closed was, that they had been interrupted so often, and he thought it would be bad to close them in. SH ;) and a fair attendance of members being present. After the reading of the minutes of the last which were: roved, Mr. Kauffmann stated that he had, as he had been instructed, applied tothe proprietors of the various places of amusement in the city for an exhibition for the relief of the poor; the result of which was a donation of $104.90 from the Treasurer of the Skating Park, that amount having been re- crived a8 Monday's proceeds; and a letter trom Messrs. Davenport & Wallack. who said they were gomg away +o soon that it would b+ im- posible for them to comply, snd regretting their mability to do sa.
