From his birth, little Benjamin McKee has been the special object of his grandparents’ love and care. iis first word was “ap” “up” directed to his grandfather, mean- ing that he wanted to be carried. The little fellow grew into a quiet despot, refusing to be comforted or quieted by any otber means. When the family first entered the White House last spring, the children suff- ered from colds, contracted by reason of the poor ventilation of the mansion. Often, at night, in those trying times when the Presi- dent was deeply concerned by the affairs of state just committed to bis care, he paced the floor of his room, with little Benjamin in his arms, soothing him to quiet and sleep, when no one save “grandpa” could manage him with good results. —A.
