That Tas Everrxa Star shonid exemplify the sentiment quoted above has been the steady purpose of its present management ever since it aseamed control of the paper, Its con- stant aim has been to print alithe news, local, dom: ic and foreign, at the earliest moment Possible; to comment upon it intelligently; to discuss all questions affecting its readers dis- Passionately and fairly; to stand up always and firmly for the rights and interests of th People of Washington and the District of Co- Jambi to become, in short, a complete, high- class family newspaper, which would be re- regarded as, and actually becom daily necessity to the membors of a ery household within its reach. How far this high ideal has beon realized, in the estimation of the public, the phenomenal circulation of ‘Tue Sran attests in most unmistakable terms, To the ends its conductors have ever kept in view, patient industry, sleopless energy, judi- cious enterprise, fair dealing, honesty of pur- Pose, and unstinted expenditures in the pro- curement of news and in providing an outfit of the best and fastest printing machinery in the world, have been inseparably united. So much for the past, with which the people of Wash- ington are familiar, As the future may be judged by it, so, therefore, the readers of the Paper may feel assured that the high position it has reached will always be maintained, and # still higher point touched and held if possible. Asits patrons know, it has always beon tho rule of the paper that the constantly increas- ing demands for advertising space should not be allowed to curtail the room necessary to keep its readers fully posted in all the happen- ings of the world which properly interest intel- ligent and right-minded people, and, further- more, that in typographical appearance its Pages should be at least equal to those of any deily paper in the country. For some time past, with the space at command, it has been difficult to harmonize the opposing demands of advertising and rending matter, while the high standard of typographical excellence has not | been maintained as completely as could be de- | sired. Accordingly, for the purpose of serving to the fallest extent the interests of all its patrons, ‘Tne Stan will on Monday next appear in a new and beautiful dress throughout, and coincident with that event its eight comely pages will be permanently enlarged to eight columns each, in lieu of seven, as now—making an increase in the size of the regular issues of the Paper equal to an addition of and one-seventh to a page its presont form, This important enlargement will make Tur Stan one of the very largest duily newspapers | in the United States, and, indeed, in the world, as it has long been acknowledged to be one of the best and handsomest. With the enlargements and improvements made in the paper from time to time, as its patronage justified, its readers are more or less familiar, in @ general way; but a single | illustrative comparison out of a number which might be cited will bring that point more plainly into view. When its present conduct- ors took charge of the paper, now a little more than twenty-three years ago, it consisted of only four pages, in size 1534 by 2034 inches, each, thus furnishing » total of 1271 square inches of print per day. On and after Monday next there will be eight pages, each 183; by 2234 inches in size, thus giving to the patrons of the paper an aggregate of $350 square inches of printed matter daily, or nearly three times as much as was originally furnished. It may be said here, also, that within the period named the expenses of carrying on each and every department of the paper have increased’ in even greater proportion than the size of the paper, and in some of them as much as four or five fold; but, notwithstanding all the great benefits the readers of the paper have thereby reaped, both in the larger quantity and better quality of rending matter furnished, its cost, fo them, has not been ad- vanced so much as the least fraction of s far- thing. The price at which it is furnished now is precisely the same as when tho present man- agement assumed contro!,—viz: 2 cents per single copy, at the office, and 44 cents per month, delivered to subscribers at their resi- dence anywhere in the city. This isa business record of which we think any enterprise or establishment might be justly proud, And so of the future, of which the past is a pledge, As heretofore, so here- after no expense or pains will be spared to keep Tue Star at the “very fore front of journalism,” and to make it, as it has always beer, “Good Enough for Anybody, and Cheap Enough for Everybody.” Washington News and Gossip. Preparing to Receive the Brazilian Squadron at New York. es NEWS FROM THE INDIAN COUNTRY, —— BURIED UNDER MANY BRICKS, A Number of Workmen Injured by @ Falling Wall. denser Crry, N. J., Nov, 22.—The wall of a brick building which Wells, Fargo & Co. are erecting on Pavonin avenue near Cole street suddeniy fell at 9:30 this morning, burying « Jarge number of workmen in the debria, The police, firemen and ambulances were soon on the spot, and the work of extricating the buried men commenced. From underneath the big pile of brick and timbers were heard faint calls for help, “We are being crashed to death!” “For God's sake help us out!” While willing hands tore away the bricks from the maimed limbs of the men underneath others pulled away iron girders and heavy blocks of wood, As fast as the ambulances arrived the injured meu were put into them and sent te tho hospital. THIRTY-FIVE TAKEN OUT. By 10:30 eight masons, twelve iron workers and fifteen laborers had been taken out and sent to the hospital. Owing to the confusion their nay could not be learned. The injuries of some are regarded as fatal and it is probable a number of them will die. One man is kuown to be dead. bis body lymg crushed be- neath the heavy iron girders and the first Soor. ‘Thus far the men have been unable to pull the girders off. The mason work was being done by Michael Brennan and at the time of the crash he was superintending, but was uninjured. The irom work was being done by Post & McCord of New York, Itis understood that the iron girders which were used in tho construction of the building were entirely too heavy for the brick work and their weight tore down the east wall, while the other wa.ls remain standing. The injured men are still being taken out and itis believed there are yet a number in the ruins, TWO DEAD BODIES REMOVER, Larer.—The dead body of George Barke, an iron worker, was taken out about 11 o'clock, It is now known that only ten men were sent to the hospital. They are seriously injured, some of them probably fatally, Their namse are Nicoly Cedrano, right leg fractured and contu- ci . serious contusions on the side and seslp wound; Thomas Kerr, wound on the forehead: Nicolo ¢ urano, broke his col- lar bone Nicolo Gelult, Euil Hagen, shoulder and arm red; Italian, name unknown, badly braised. se are all in St. Francis Hospital, ‘The other men were sent home after having their wounds dressed. Among the latter was ch ‘Thomas ho hada bad scalp wound, About 11:30 o'clock the dead body of John Barrett of 27th street and 7th avenue, New York city was, taken out of the runing” It is now feared that two or three other bodies are in the ruins, — PROSPECTS OF AN OUTBREAK, The Situation at the Indian Reserva- tions Serious. Curcaco, Nov. 22—The situation at the Indiaa reservations in Montana and the Dakotas is much more serious than the public at large thinks, Sosays Frank White, and he | certainly ought to know. Mr. White is the government interpreter at Pine Ridge agency and is one of the best posted persons in the country as to the feelings of the Indians jover the Messiah craze. For the past two days White has been in this city, Hi esight hus been gradually failing, until he was threat- ened with total blindness, and it was to pre- ent this that he came to Chicago for treat- ment, Now his fears have been aroused for the of his family, and yesterday morning he started for his home to look after his wife and children, Mr. White has some Indian blood in his veins and his knowledge of the Indians and of their languages gained for him the appoint- | ment as an interpreter, a position that he has held for along time. Duriag Gen. Miles’ re- cent trip throrgh the northwest White accompanied him and was the mouth piece through which the soldier communicated with the redskins, White says that there is danger of an uprising of the Indians at any mo- meni, The redskins during the past few years have thoroughly armed themselves and ‘have sufficient auumunition to last them for many months. As wars brought about by religious excite- ment have always been more bloody and more bitterly contested than others it is feared that an uprising now would mean the death of hun- | dreds of settlors before the troops could be sent to their assistance. Mr. White says that the Messiah craze, which originated in Montana, has now spread through the whole north- west, aud that in the five reser- vations within a radius of 200 miles around Pine Kidge agency the Indians are half crazed and that the slightest thing would now start them on the war path, That they will make an attack very soon be has no doubt, as there have alwuys been pienty of chiefs and discontented braves in the tribes who would be glad to see a war commenced at any time, and who will take advantage of the present excitement to force am outbreak, MATERIAL ADVANCES MARKED. The Dealings in New York Stocks Show Activity and Strength. New You, Nov. 22—There was nothing im the News this morning to change the temper of the stock market, aud the dealings therefore continued to show the activity and strength of yesterday, with the result of marking material advances over the entire list. First prices were all higher, the gains being fractional in all ex- cept Missouri Pacifie and Canada Southern, each of which was up 1'g per cent from last night. ‘There was great animation shown, especially in St. Paul, Union Pacific, Northern Pacific pre- ferred, Atchison, Richmond end West Point and Rock Island, and all of those stocks with 4 the exception of Missouri Pacific and Northern Pacitic preferred showed material advances be- fore the endof the hour. Lackawanna and Rock Island each rose 13g per cent, Union Pacific 13, Louisville and Nashville and and refineries each 1, Colorado coal 134, Rich- mond and West Point preferred 1, St Paul % and others generally large fractions. The urgent demand of the early trading slacked away toward 11 o'clock and there was « partial reaction, while the Villards showed considerable weakness, Northern Pacific com- mon retiring nearly 1 per cent. There was no material progress made in the downward direction, however, and at 11 o'clock the mar- ket active and firm at close to the best prices reached. Money has been easy, with no loans, but offered at 5 cent. In the stock market after 11 o'clock there were no important move- ments, and the volume of business was some- what smaller than during the first hour. The market was inclined tosag and quotationsshaded off slightly all along the line, but Atchison moved up a fraction, and with St Paul led in the dealings. The bank statement showed only ssmall change, though that was sufficient to being the surplus reserve once more above the legal requirementa. The market finally closed active and , with most of the list ator ear the best of the day. WELCOMING BRAZIL’S SHIPS. Lonisi- | #0m0r to Be Paid the Squadron on Its Arrival.
