WHAT I SAW, AND HEARD,| It is stated that two intelligent and higbly respected young color- ed ladies are at the New Endland Conservatory of Music in Boston and have become tke objects of so- cial ostracism. Joe Jackson, alias Winslow, alias Brock, the highwayman and con- federate of Rub Burrows committ- ed suicide in the penitentiary in Miss., last Monday, by jamping headlong from the fourth gallery. The field of corn is much less than anticipated in Lincoln Neb., and further West farmers bave nothing to feed with and vast quantities of hogs, half fatenea are being rushed to market and sacri- ficed at low prices, In Ohio the State Board of Agri- cultare is greatly excited by the prevalence of hog cholera in the central counties of the State and the action of the large hog raisers in rushing their animals to mark- et. There may be fifty candidates in the field in ’92, but I am confident that President Harrison will be re nomiaated by acclamation. There is no reason why that he should not be. ats Whatever may be said of Com- missioner Ross, the colored people can bet on it, that they have a friend in him. Mr. Ross does net know any man by his color. He is to-day one of the best friends the colored people have. His record while City Postmaster verifies my statement. ate The editor of the Bez has not the slighest objections to the editor ot the ‘*Masonic Guide” stealing his “They Say,” which he uses edi torily and ‘What I Saw And Heard,” so long as he tells the pub- lic. In the Guide of November 15, the whole ‘-They Say” and ** What ISaw & Heard,” were reproduced and no credit at all given to the Beg. An editor or a writter who will deliberately steal matter and publish the same as his own will murder a child iu cold blood. QUEEN VICTORIA'S COSTLY MISTAKE. Queen Victoria is said to bave a gteat fondness for pearls. Sie has taken care that all her daughters shall have fine pearl necklaces. One of her first purchases, after the birth of each, has been two or three pearls, and every year, until their marriage, she has added a pearl or two to ber stock antil the necklace she required was ready. In this quiet, economical way she has been enabled to make up &@ most complete rope of pearls for each of the princesses, and those who have seen the necklaces at court, say that the daughters are, 80 far as pearls go, well sup- plied with jewelry. Thereby bangs a tale. Some years ago her Majesty bought from a well-known London jeweler three very valuable pearls, * ** The newspapers, or rather sup- posed to be, speaking for the poli- ticians, say that Mr. Blaine will be the candidate of the republican party in ’92. A little while after the purchase had been made, the merchant was surpsised to received to receive a letter from a lady at court, which read: “The Queen wishes very much to know whetber pearls will burn.” The reply to this somewhat tartly scientificinquiry wasan assur- ance that if her Majesty wishes to oxy genize pearls for her amusement she would find tnat they would burn in an ordinary fire. The Queen had placed the pearls on ber writ- ing desk, wrapped in a piece of tissue paper. As she was writing one moruing, she used the tissue paper to wipe her pen, and then threw it into the fie. The pearls, all unobserved, went with it. The ashes of the grate were searched for them ia vain. They had been destroyed se utterly as to leave no race. The Queen with her own hand had cast three splendid jewels, worth more than the average in come of her middle-class subjects, into the blaze—Ladies’ Home Journal. Gf Ueara Shorthand Gh * ** Mr. BR. If there were more citizens like those in East Washington, I am sure that there wouid be less crime and poverty in the city. Every eitizea should manifest an interest in the poor; every citizen who 1s himself in good circumstances should have atender feeling for his tellow man.
