Begin To-Day in Bowling Green Under Evening World’s Big Tree ‘All New York Will Be There, and There Will Be Carols and Illuminations, Enlivened by Trinity ' Chimes and an Army Band. The Evening World's Christmas tree, set in the round basin of the fountain in Bowling Green Park, will blaze with lights of many colors this afternoon, as soon as the gathering dusk marke the close of business in she financial district and the beginning of triple holidays. ‘The occasion will be a treat for the © wyes and the ears of the homegoing throngs and a fitting prelude for the fest of the Christmas festivities. ‘The chimes of Trinity Church will begin the ceremonies at 4 o'clock by playing the melodies of all the Christ- “aes Carols that the crowd will sing @ Uttle later under the tree in front of the Custom House. a ‘Then the Gioria Trumpeters, splen- idly cowtumed in keeping with the spirit of tho season, will lead the way from the church to Bowling Green, yreceded by the 16th Infantry Band, Fort Jay, Governor's Island, present i through the courtesy of Col, Charles { Gerhardt, with the approval of Major f Gen. Ballard, It ts one of the finest | bands in the United States Army, It will give a concert for half an hour antl the dusk has settled. The main purpose of the whole demonstration, however, Is to get the whole downtown district properly started in the Christmas spirit, and to that end the community singing of the carols is the esential. “Start ‘em singing lustly, and Christmas itself will do the rest,” said Edward D. Cray, the young man whose determination made the whole program possible. Of coure all those who are participating—by gifts of time or money or work or all three— are yoluntary contributors and cager. But the idea was Cray’s. The ini- tative was his. The suggestions were from him. And in that sense his show. Cray is the Young Men's Christian Association secretary for work with boys in the financial district. He gets the big business men working with him by reminding therh that “every boy whose ideals can be raised will be a better employco as well as g bet- , br citizen.” So Cray got the city authorities to give the use vf the fountain basin; got The Evening World to give the free; got the United fttavea Govetn~ ment to Iend the Custum House, At his suggestion C. R. Doo'py of the Standard Of] Company of New Jersey is giving up his office so thar three great flood lights can be installed there—it's No. 10 Broadway—as well as in No. 1, across the street. The lights will play sometimes on the tree Itself, sometimes on the great steps of the Custom House, which will serve as a natural theatre for the Gloria Trumpeters as they lead in the einging. The Evening World has printed many copies of the carols, which will bé distributed througM the crowd to help Bet the words. right, But the singers will not have to depend on the printed slips alone, for Charles Bescler & Co. have provided a stere- optican and slides, by which the words of each carol will be flashed overhead on a screen stretched across the lofty entrance arch of the Custom House. The Evening World Christmas tree was erected yesterday and the Inst of its decorations and the stringing of tiny electric lamps’ from branch to branch was finished to-day. Already word has gone out through- out the financial districts and to the Syrian quarter and the South Street tenements that everybody is welcome.
