‘Vided, or, rather let us say, doubled Great preparations had been made for the event, even to drawing on the Mighes of Venice for the settings. The result was a magnificent spectacle set forth in a large yet unostentatious way. We had Shakespeare with beauty and without fads, opulent and #ane, sumptuous and clear. It was he ver sepulchral nor glaring. When night crept into tho street before Shy- Jock’s door it was lighted only by the Pitching lanterns of the merrymakers A sense of desolation came with o gitmpee into the house from which Jessica had flown. Stately magnifi gence marked the court scene. Portia’s garden at Belmont was a vision 0! Moonlit loveliness, Belasco fulfilled every expectation of perfection. Meanwhile, evety eye in the house measured Warfield for the great rol hhe had undertaken. It didn't matter that he lacked the stature of famouy Predecessors. After all, Shylock rep- Tesents « race in which tall men are the exception rather than the rule ‘This much, and more, could readily be granted Warfield, for he proved at once that he had added greatly to his artistic stature. He was no halting, feeble Shylock, nor was he by any means mild and gentle. Any tempta- tion he may have felt to play for sym- pathy was thrust aside, He went eturdily and directly about the busi- Bess in hand. Here we had both the strength and wurprise of a wholly individual per- formance. Warfield was a true Shy- Jock, utterly unlike any we fad ever ween. He betrayed none of the sigus of the familiar tragedian. Fis gves- tures were racially expressive, whether clapping his hands above his head and thanking God, or running wildly from his empty house and crying out upun dessica and the law. Even his break- ing volce carried conviction as he out wrath mixed with grief. it was not so much his outward how as that he seemed to be Shy- Jock under the skin. In the trial scene Warfield pu'sed ‘and throbbed with eagerness for the pound of flesh. His gleaming eyes peemed to see it, and his face glowed ‘with the insanity of vengeance. Mrke no mistake about it, he was a vengeful Jew in evéry look and move. No one knows the gentle art of pathos better than he, yet for once he didn’t seem to let it matter. Apparently, he telt ft too small a thing to consider, in- significant beside a determined pur- pose, even when that purpose failed. Whether this be true or not, he took such a short cut from the cnurt that there wasn't much room for « final Gisplay of gentler emotion, Irving made a lot of this, but then ho made lot of other things that weren't nec- essarily true, Warfield played Shy- Jock without compromise and so made you believe in him. Instead of striv- Ing Gesperately to be ‘great’ he con- cerned himself with being real If this happened to be his ambition, he assuredly realized it. Mary Servoss was a bright, ani- mated Portia, occasionally a bit studied, though always reading her Mines clearly and intelligently gnd bringing off her part of the trial scene excellently. We learned from Mr. Be- Ianco that she labored under the diffi- culties of quinsy sore throat and a temperature of 102, so we must admit THE NEW PLAYS Warfield a True Shylock in Superb Belasco Production By CIIARLES DARNTON.
