A section of Greenwich Village was mroused at 1 A. M. to-day by a rald on &m alleged opium den at No. 44 Washington Square South. According to Dr, Carlton Simon, he recelved information that men and women were going to an apartment on the top floor to “hit the pipe.”* Dr. Simon and Detectives Boylan, Barry, Rogers and Biallfer of the Nareotic Squad followed a man to the door this morning and heard him say as fe went in, “The dicks are here.” They broke down the door and say somebody smashed the only light in the apartment. * Boylan and Barry fought several men in the dark with their fists, fear- ing if they used their revolvers they might chvot each other, They won a quick victory and switched bn the lights. In the fight something crashed through a window and struck below, A detective found a woman in the yard in a state of collapse. She had been looking up to seo what was go- ing on when the bundle came hurtling down and struck within a few Inches of her, The detectives say the bundle contained a complete burglary outfit from jimmy to gloves and would have killed her {f it had hit her.
