He had been Mi for three weeks, but his condition ‘was not considered serious until pneu- monia developed several days ago. He is survived by a widow and two chil- Gren. Mr. Cary was born in Racine, Wis., Feb. 11, 1858. After attending the public schools of La Cygne, Kan., he ‘went to work in the office of the Journal there and learned the print- _@r's trade. His first real newspaper experience was in Milwaukee in 1876, when he became a reporter on the Milwaukee Sentinel. He was made Managing editor and held that position until 1883. He next went to Chicago, where he was managing editor of the Times for three years. te becamo Succeasively general western manager of the New York Associated Press, Managing editor of the New York ‘Times and writer on the St, Louis Post-Dispatch. When the Spanish-American War broke out he went to Cuba in charge of the field staff of the New York World. Returning to New York he Published the Verdict for two years, He then became managing editor of the Morning Telegraph, and later its publisher. In 1907 Mr. Cary, tiring of editorial work, became general manager of the Detroit I’ree Press, and in 1908 he was appointed to a sim- Mar position with the St, Louls Re- public.
