De Evening World’s Weekly Road Maps for Auto Owners}: Of New York; Study Map Before tlie Tours Bvery outo owner planning a Sat- wrday or Sunday tour should be in posscesion of the very last word on road conditions before making a finat decision. By arrangement with 0. M. Wells, Chief Roadman of the Aw tomodile Club of America, The Bve- ning World on Friday of each week will print a special article on tours that cannot fail to prove of incatcu- lable value to owners, Save your aelf tire troubles, breakdowns and kindred verations by consulting The Evening World maps and facts about roads, Routes Through Eastern Part of Pennsylvania By O. M. Wells, (Chief Roadman the Automobile Club of America.) Many miles of highways have been built this year in Eastern Pennsyl- vania under the direct supervision of the State Highway Department, which controls the State highway system, and although there were a number of sections on the main trunk Ines under construction where long and poor detours were necessary the State Highway Department of Penn- sylvanta should be highly commended for the rapid progress and the most excellent type of roads built under its supervision, At this time of year a great many motorists get ready to motor south, and it is just as necessary to know the conditions of the roads on the first lap as it is on the last if the extreme end of the Florida peninsula is the objective. A great many motorists prefer to go down by the way of Gettysburg, then over into the Shenandoah Val- ley. Heretofore it has been very dif- ficult to get to Easton, then across the eastern part of Pennsylvania, as all of the trunk Ines across New Jersey have been more or less under construction, Motorists can now go to Easton through Montelatr, . Par- sippany and Denville to Netcong over a beautiful road that was recently finished and ts mostly concrete, then around Budd's Lake to Hackettstown and through the Muscanetcong Val- ley through Beattystown to Easton. There has been construction work on the William Penn Highway betwoen Easton and Harrisburg and there is still a section Undér construction be- tween Humnieigtown’ and Harrisburg which we are in’ hopes will be ellm- inated in the next few weeks. A new road from Harrisburg to Gettysburg is in excellent condition and there is also aconsiderable amount of 1 proved road running north along the Susquehanna River through Harris- burg to Williamsport. The new concrete road which has been under construction all summer between Sunbury and Williamsport is finished. There is construction work between Harrisburg and Sun- bury on the west side of the river and the detours are very, very poor, Motorists going through from Easton via Bethlehem, Allentown, Reading and Harrisburg to Gettysburg will d the road in pretty fair shape ex- cept the detour above mentioned pbe- tween Hummelstown and Harris- burs. ‘There is construction work between Harrisburg and Carlisle on the direct line from Harrisburg to Chambers- burg. Motorists will find it prefer- able to go viz Gettysburg to reach the Lincoln Highway from Easton, Pa. The Lincoln Highway ts in fair condi - tion most of the way from Philadel - phia through Coatesville, Lancaster, York and Gettysburg to Chambers- burg. Motorists going south during the fall months from Gettysburg will find it preferable to go through Emmits- burg to Frederick, then to Washington via Relgelsville, where the start is made for the trip south. For those coming down from Scran- ton and the Lackawanna Trat!, we suggest that they sun through Pitts- ton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton to Tam- aqua, Pottsville and Port Clinton to Reading, where there is a choice of two roads, one going direct to Lanci ter joining the Lincoln Highway, al avoiding the detour between Hum- melstown and Harrisburg, or the Will- jam Penn Highway between Reading and Harrisburg. Those coming down from New York State und points beyond Port Jervis can follow the Delaware River to Stroudsburg, then via the Wind Gap to Easton. It is also very Interest- ing to motor along the Poconos from Scranton through Tobyhanna, Mt Pocono, Swiftwater and Bartonsville, By the touring season of next year most of the trunk lines through Eas- ton, Pennsylvania, will be in good condition as there are stil] a number of sections to be improved, and If the State of Mennsylvania continues with the rapid progres’ made throughout the summer the hilly%sectton and roll- ‘ng country throughout easte"» Penn sylvania will be a dilghtfus piace to motor, Jn next Friday's issue of The E ning World, a resume of good conditions will be given, together with & map, covering all the sections from Philadelphia to Washington, taking in parts of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Colum- bia, Cuticura Soap ——— AND OINTMENT —— Clear the Skin Stes" Seteain Usbocitee opt white Wess Thornton Bury M.—United States by Capt.
