With her hus- band's knowledge she undertakes to keep Challange at # safe distance, but the truth {s she goes about it witi: so little skill that he manages to slip past every barrier she tries to ra.se, even going so far as to suggest that a girl of twenty cannot know the kind of man she will love at thirty. This is really the beginning of the mischief, for it starts her thinking along a new line. Moreover, the hus: band falls into the bad habit of asking her questions. Not only is this a fatal course to take, but it causes the first act of the play to drag with tedious repetitions, be It ws with the lover's avowal that the tug of drama is felt, and the re- sistance of the wife seems to make Jt stronger. She takes a determined stand, only to be swept off her feet. This struggle of the woman fs the tinest thing in the play. Broken at last, she means to go away next day with her lover, who has the exceed- ingly bad taste to come to her house at night and urge her to even hastler fight. Rut into a stormy scene with her husband fs brought the memory of a dead child, and the woman re- alizes she cannot leave the home that las meant so much to her; realizes, too, that her love for the man beside her is a better and bigger thing than her mad passion for the tmpetu- cus lover, As a matter of fact, she could scarcely believe Challange when he declared that at thir! ight he was telling a woman for the first time that he loved her. It didn't sound reasonable, Never has Grace George been 60 fine as in the varying moods of the wife, She seemed a bit strained in the opening act, but afterward she gave kuch warmth and tenderness and beauty to the role that she made @ direct appeal to the heart. Beyond doubt it was a performance from the heart, moving, simple and true. As the lover, Mr. Warwick caught the /French manner admirably, and car- ried off his more difficult scenes with romantic fervor and power. There was real power, too, in Mr. Trevor's final rage as the distracted husband.
