THE NEW PLAYS Human Chimpanzee the Novelty of “Revue Russe” By CHARLES DARNTON ee F all the animal-actors ever seen here there has been none to compare with the ape-like performer who not only appeared on the stage of ,the Booth Theatre last night in Mme, Marla Kousnezoff’s “Revue Russe,” but clambered over orchestra chairs, climbed to an elevated box @nd then completed his amazing portion of the evening's entertainment by walking on all fours along tho entire length of the balcony rail. This human chimpanzee, with ake-up no less remarkable than his ts, was the striking novelty, not © say sensation, of the second Rus- sian show of its kind to surprise the town. For some reason his name was Rot given in the tetra possibly Out of fear that the 8. P..C. A. would step in before he Twas his real face and call a halt on his act. Seri- Ously, the only thing to fear ts that of these nights a nervous woman atfrighted by this apparition in the balcony may throw a fit that will land her shrieking on the heads of People downstairs. ‘The other feat well, Mme. Kousnezoft sang Violetta’s elaborate arla from “La Traviata” with considerable gusto—which may be the Russian way of doing it—and later on she was more simple and quite charming in a pretty little Ukrainian song. She also proved her variety as an artist of uncommon gifts in a Spanish dance that she made a whirl of color and grace. Her dark beauty and dashing alr won for her unbounded admiration. There exhilarating action of an- other sort when three robust women in peasant dress kept a huge swing going with much the same vigor and yelping cries that Katinka puts in her famous polka. ‘This number hi an Irresistible sweep of color an¢ movement. A pantomime that ended with murder gained a curious in- terest, if nothing more, from a back- ground of autdmatic figures of work- ing people apparently in the last stage of dejection, Then M. Posemkowski came on and cheered us up with a serenade that was well sung. There was infectious humor in a mateh- making sketch similar to the one in the “Chauve Souris,” and the two women who were the life of it made it rich with character. At the end everybody joined gully in a Russian fair. An excellent orchestra added to the enjoyment of the performance, but the musicians were pgrched so high that they sometimes shut off the view of dancing feet. Certainly, the human chimpanzee todk no chances of not being seen, though this extraordinarily clever acrobat seemed to take every chance of breaking his neck es were more fa.
