10" “THE ah tT WORLD, FRI THE NE W PLAYS William Courtenay Survives Whiskers in “Her Temporary Husband.” By CHARLES DARNTON the age of romance at the Frazee Theatre last night in ‘Her Temporary P WAS as the true lover in false whiskers that William Courtenay restored Husband," a playful thing by May seem, it was the only way to ma You see, the dear girl thought she felt she couldn't afford to do it just t against !t and fixed the usual pena dward A, Paulton, Extravagant as this ake a. $100,000 h happy. » wanted to marry a fortune hunter, but hen, ty, as her father had left strict orders But he didn't say anything about her not marrying the worthless fellow after she had made a trip to the altar with any old man. So being an un to wed a man old enough to die, whe commonly reupon she bright girl, Blanche decided hied herself to a sanitartum and opened negotiations for a septuagenarian who was as full of complaints Her greedy and he as the telephone office along to sound the patient, widow in a month or two. suitor, who had studied medicine, went was satisfied that Blanche would be a These ghastly details are recited to Prepare you for the whiskers. Tom Burton, smooth as they make had seen Blanche eating corn at the Ritz, and from that day loved her as @ starving man loves fritters. So ‘em, whiskers simply to let the play take {ts unnatural course, It takes an amusing turn when Tor confronts her as her grandson and kisses her with something more than the warmth of a distant relative. In what does Tom do but consult his time, of course, she learns who he is, friend, the doctor at the sanitarium.|inat’ he haa saved her Ife, and put » of the physical ssed inspection. He ts wheeled in wearing a long white beard, wig and blue goggles, and then wheeled out into the operating room that is, the place where the marriage te performed. This over, he is sent on his honeyrzoon in an ambulance to Southampton. But Tom doesn't complain that so- elety life fs killing him. When no one but his faithful servitor is looking he comes out of his whiskers for air, and one day when the undertow is on its bad behavior he saves the unconscious Blanche from drowning. Even in her conscious moments she doesn't seem to be a keenly discerning person, else she would recognize at a glance the toy whiskers that look as though they had been acquired at a five-and-ten- cent store. Her failure to make this discovery cannot be explained on the theory that love is blind, as her love for Tom hasn't had a chance to sprout up to this time. Somehow, you feel her eyes are closed to those himself out in other little ways for her sake, and is happily reconciled to her strange fate as his wife. ‘‘Her Temporary Husband’’ ts a remark~- Strange play, but it has Its en- aining moments nks to his skill, abl Mr. Courtenay survived even the whiskers. In the wheel-chair he seemed a palsied wreck, but out of it he was so active that he kept the play moving at a fast clip, and further enlivened it with his inexhaustible good nature Added humor by George Parsons, as the doctor, did much to help along the performance, and Harry R. Allen was genuinely amusing in the part of the sanitarium attendant. Ann An- drews was a decorative Blanche, though somewhat Wanting as a com edienne when kissed as a grand- mother, and Selina Royle made a most desirable nurse with a gentle leaning toward romance. But, as a whole, ‘Her Temporary Husband" is romance that tumbles headlong Into farce. Screenings By DON ALLEN POME. Little Mary, why so contrary? And why are you 8o slow? Dear Screenie: I've noticed in your column several recent references to the paramount question—“What's the Matter With the Movies?” Here are twenty-eight answers! You are welcome! EDNA." In making a series of ‘Great Eng- lish Authors’? which will be a com- panion series to the ‘Great American Authors,"" James A. Fitzpatrick is hesitating over the inclusion of Mil- ton as one of the twelve in the series. Mr. Fitzpatrick recently returned from England where he gathered the necessary historical material for the series and is now engaged at Urban Institute at Irvington in filming the dramatic portions of the twelve sub: jects in the series. The hesitation over Milton 1s ob- vious to those who know their ‘Para dise Lost’? and other works of the famous Englishman. ‘The abstract quality !s so emphatic in all of Mil ton’s works, the dramatic quality s0 of his commuting trips Hollywood and New York. The First National Club, composed of officials and employees of Assocl- ated First National Pictures, Inc., gave a party yesterday which was attended not only by New York work- ers in the big organization but by the Eastern District brane!) managers and salesmen who are here attending a conference. Six buses filled with the club mem- bers and their guests left the First National offices, No. 8 West 48th Street, at 5 o'clock yesterday after- noon and proceeded to Tappan's Inn, Sheepshead Bay, where a shore dinner was served, Afterward they went to Steeplechase Park, where they remained until 11 o'clock. The buses then brought them back to the city. The club members voted the affair the most enjoyable given since the formation of the First National Club, the object of which is to foster a spirit of co-operation among First National workers.
