Ryan have been quite thor- oughly cleared up by the auction sale of securities pledged by Ryan with banks as collateral for loans, It may now be accepted with a rea- sonablo degree of certainty that Stutz Motor stock will sooner or later find its way back on the New York Stock Exchange. Action of the Guaranty Trust Com- pany in buying for Its own account not only the 111,614 1-8 shares pledged with it by Ryan, but tn addition 21,- 200 shares that had been held by other banks as collateral, is significant, It certainly must be true that the Guaranty Trust Company does not Propose to hold this stook for invest- ment. If it had been content to buy the 111,619 1-3 shares pledged with it such action might properly have been interpreted as signifying that the trust company's purpose was to sever Ryan's connections with the loan and permit the trust company to have free course of action. Rut when the Guaranty ‘Trust Company goes beyond this point and buys at the auction sale an additional 21,200 shares, it may safely be tnter- preted as moaning that the trust company ix desirous of obtaining stock that might hamper any plans it may have tentatively formed to create a market for the stock, a mars ket which in its tnitiation must be carefully nursed, \ere. were many puraling feat- ures connected with the auction sale of collateral Ryan had pledged with banks. As an Instance, Ryan's Stock Ex- change seat, or the proceeds there- from, been pledged with the Guaranty Trust Company along with va jous other collateral, Following Ryan's expulsion from the Stock Exchange his seat was sold for $98,000. It is a rule of the Stock Exchange, and one that has withstood the test of legal proceedings, that member firms have a prior lien on the seat of ‘member that becomes bankrupt. In Ryan's case, he did not declare his bankruptcy until more than two venrs after his seat was sold. It was everywhere understood In Wall Street that all claims New York Stock Exchange members had against him were settled in full. At least, none appear as his creditor. Yet, despite the fact that his seat sold for $98,009, and that “all right, title and interest In and to proceeds of the sale of the Stock Exchange seat"? were offered at auction, the only bid received was for $75,000, and that was made by the Guaranty ‘Trust Company.
