16 TENDLER SAYS HE a LEW ACCUSES CHAMPION OF BENG. A QUITTER “f Don't Think for a Minute the Fight Will Go the Limit,” Says Contender: “Either He or | Will Take the Count—That's the Way | Want to Win or Lose.” By Thornton Fisher. DELANCO, N. J, July 2 If toore is anything that impresses one at the Tendler camp it is the silent, grim fashion in which the Hghtweight contender methovically pursues bis dally training. The disinclination to talk, to say one word of prophecy concerning next Thursday's battle at Boyle's Thirty Acres, is perhaps the most conspicuous feature down here. Only a pair of knitted brows on a determined, swarthy face indicates that Lefty Lew Tendler has heard the verbal shafts hurled at him from Budd Lake. The tendency here is to regard Benny's statements in the light of a boy passing a graveyard at night and whistling to keep up his courage. Slight ciedence is given to the idea that Lew {s going to prove “ve for the champion. That the Philadelphia ex-newsboy is going to face the severest test of his career no one in the know doubts. On the other hand ft is figured that Leonard has never met a man of the calibre of Tendler. & hard socking southpaw who also poss use it. Close observation and analysis of ¢—————____ ses a right when he cares to both men gives the champion the admit he wasn’t a champion then, but he quit to Shugrue and Frankie Fleming. Yee, that's just what he did, quit. 1 don't think for a minute that the fight will go the limit. Either he or | will take the count. That's the way | want to lose or win. So far as a plan of battle is concerned, | won't have one until the bell rings for the first round. I'm going to what he is going to do and then I'll fight according- ly." edge, however. Leonard's footwork 1s more nimble than Tendler’s, hi accurate hitting from all angles gives Benny another advantage. While Lew’s deadly left 1s all that has been said of it, it is lable to leave the conte the jaw which may spill him on he canvas, and a fighter like Leonard overlooks no bets For stamina and brute strength der open for a right cross 10 they compare favorably. There is no doubt that Lew can take it and is as game as they come. In the camp the Philadelphian is a glutton for work. The biggest job Glass: has ix to hold Tender in leash to restrain hin from overexertion. Out in his open air ring, under a broiling sun, Lew took on Tim Droney, Joe Tiplitz and Harry Brown for two three-minute rounds each, and then wanted to con tinue, but Jack Scoodles called a halt While Leonard is working with southpaws, Tendler is doing his stuff with orthodox fighters. Tim Droney, who weighs 142 pounds, is the sturdi- est member of the sparring staff Droney has fought both men, having met Leonard only last fall in Phila- deiphia, and while not of contender timber, {s certainly not a selling plater. In his workout to-day Droney threw a flock of effective rights tc Lew's head without much trouble, only, however, to double up under the impact of Lew's left as it sank into his midriff. In his fights with Leonard, Droney was unable to lay a real glove on the champion. On the other hand, Benny couldn't hurt Dro- ney, while Tendler made Tim double up ip pain. Droney says that Tend- ler is the ‘cat's meow"? and will win the title. This may be discounted as “old home" stuff. To say that Tendler hasn't a chance 1s absurd. He has a chance, more than a fair chance. A good body puncher is always in the money. Dempsey is the greatest body puncher extant with the added faculty of be- ing able to shoot them with both hands. Jack punished Carpentier so terribly with his body blows that the Frenchman's vitality was warped be- fore he could start. It’was compara- tively easy then to finish him with smashes to the head. Not until Dempsey began to beat a tatoo on Bill Brennan did he show in that fight. A dozen piston like socks in the mid-section started Brennan on the way to the floor and a rabbit punch finished Bill's evening. A dangerous body puncher cannot be Nightly accepted and by this token Tendler should be credited with a Sporting chance. TENDLER WILL HAVE TO CARRY FIGHT TO LEONARD. There is only one way in my epinion after all has been written with which Tendler can beat the champion, If he attempts to box Leonard, the master boxer, he will lose as sure as death and taxes for he cannot hope to cope with him in that department. His sole salvation Wes in fighting Benny, carrying the fight to the champion relentlessly and depending upon his left to find its way home. He will have to make a close up battle where his ability at infighting should be effective. At long range Leonard can play with him. At infighting Tendler is amaz- ing. He ts a much better man at the ingide stuff than Benny. The writer attempted a right hook to Lew's jaw to-day. Tendler countered with a left hook that left nothing to be de mired in the way of a thrilling impact It is hard, however, to imagine Tendler beating Leonard. Leonard, spectacularly clever, nimble of foot and of brain, with the invaluable con- fidence of a champion, with every trick of his game indexed for imme- diate and effective use—those are assets not to be ignored, But, per- haps, Benny may underestimate his @dversary. It has happened, Tendler ie hampered by no {llusions. He ts working and saying nothing. The \ silence, though, is not fear. The ehampion’s verbal attack upon the Philadelphian has apparently failed to take the effect one might suspect ! Lasked Tendler about it as he re- efined on a bed in his quarters, “Let Leonard talk,’’ said Tend- fer. ‘‘It don't bother me. | still think he is a great fighter, but | can beat him. He is not super- human. if | should whip him after all he «: it would be em- barrassing for him to be licked by euch an awful dub, wouldn't it? He's been knocked out himself, | ment of populas songs.
