200 Squirrels Have A Home Like a Palace Red Ones and Gray Ones, Little and Big, Have Two Stories of a Splendid Suburban Residence as Their Own. By Fay Stevenson, Copyright, 1922 (New York Evening World) by Press Publishing Compaay OMETIMES dogs and cata sleep S in beds with sheets and eat pate de foils gras and French ice cream with silver spoons, but this is the story of squirrels who not only live upon the fat of the land but live right in the house with thelr master and mistr In fact, these pet squirrels occupy the whole second and third floors of the house, while the owners live downstairs and never intrude upon their tenant rights. In a spacious three-story cottage just two miles from White Plains down winding turn from the main road one finds this happy hotne of the squirrels. They belong to Dr. Lillian Delger Powers and her hus- band, who is also a physician. And what a story there is connected with these 200 light hearted, frisking, furry little chaps. Two great stone gates with a wooden frieze of many-colored, scam- pering, frisking squirrels tell you that you have reached Red Squir- rel Farm where the Powers live With the squirrels, Then your taxi spins down a long, winding road which is bordered with Lady,"’ as she 1s locally called, greeted me in that delightful living room she brought Zita, who is named acter the ex-Empress of Austria, down as the leading member of this large rquirrel family. This dainty bit of feminine squirreldom ts a delightful Titian red and ie just about one-half the size of the ordinary gray squirrel we feed pennuts to in the park. “It really is quite a treat for Zita to come down to this floor,’ said Dr, Lillian, ‘for we see to it that squir- relville is upstairs and upstairs only. Two men constantly take care of that section of the house while we manage to get along down here with Japanese help." Then, without further ceremony we climbed one flight of stairs and stood on the threshold of the squirrel home, Without waiting to be announced we opened the first door we came to and walked in. The whole floor ts divided by screened doors into separate com- partments and it is in these little rooms the squirrels live, Because squirrels are as temperamental as peo- ple, Dr. Powers explained that she nas to separate them into little groups divided into sixes and eights, Some- times where a squirrel proves very sensitive and exclusive she puts him in with only two or three and then they live happily and grow fat and chuffy.
