Another detachment of little sufferers from whooping cough was went fo-day to Riverside Island as the guests of The Evening World's Kiddie Klub Country Fund, there to be cared for with the greatest skill and tender- Ress until the youngsters are well enough to return to their homes. And hen they do so return they will, through every attention known to medical @elence, be spared the risk of contrac cling the terrible maladies that so fre- quently run in the wake of whooping cough. And during their convalescence they will have had a very happy time of #%, with toys at‘ their disposal, with any number of nurses and “little Mothers” to care for them, and crisp @hroats. No doubt they will look back p, clean air for their ttle lungs and RE @m their whooping cough days as not) frst is from a Brooklyn attorney and @uch bad ones after all Dhe first consignment of “Happi- Mess” candy, the gift of the United Candy stores, came to the Island yes- @erday and provided many a tooth- @ome hour for the children. Pepper- Mint sticks and “cutie pops” were Gistributed wherever the physicians Permitted and if any child failed to feceive of the’ dainties, it was just Because the doctor, who knows best, gaid it wasn't the best thing to per- mit, but would come on a later day. Dr, Joyce, who \s taking care of the youngsters, said that hard candy was mot at all a bad thing for kiddies who ‘Were not too sick. There is to be a gala time for the Kiddies to-morrow, when they go @board the steamer Riverside in the morning Zor a two or three hour trip along the Sound. This is the first @f many such trips which will be Provided bi-weekly for the young- ters throughout the summer. For many days, now, the children have fad to content themselves with watching the Sound steamers ‘pass in the afternoons, Now they will have @ steamer of their own from time to time. ‘The Fund is happy in the oppor- tunity to announce more contribu- tions to it, in fact to a total of $180 esterday. Very trul “Dear Dr Blumenthal—I_ am not the father of the whooping- cough victim recommended on the enclosed blank. [ am mere ly a neighbor moved to appeal on the poor child's behalf by the heartbreaking whoop I hear all day and night “The situation is this: Little Marie, aged three, happens to be a fanitor’s child—one of four, Her baby sister and ‘younger brother are also afflicted with that rav- aging disease called whooping- cough. Marte was the first to catch the malady, and hence !s now in the most advanced stage of the three. According to her parents, she has had it now about five weeks; but I believe | heard her ‘cough longer than that The point is, she is one of those children who just “grow.” Marte, with her sister and brother, play in the (dirty) yard all day. Never have I seen them taken to a park, and I doubt if they were ever in the country, Without some out- side assistance and initiative, these three children would have to recuperate from this exhaust- ing disease in the same yard where they contracted It, * “Under these circumstances, It seems to me that these cases de serve your Bureau's attention. 1 appeal for Marie because her baby sister Is under three, and her brother seems to be in the carly stage of the disease, They veally all need Riverside Island, and had I the means I should en- close my contribution to the Kid- die Club Fund. Perhaps others, on seeing this appeal, will be moved todo what the writer can- not. At any rate, 1 would have 1 gulity conscience as long any of these children coughed, | I had not at least brought this case to your attention—which 1 do entirely unsolicited, I hope your great Kiddie Club will do the rest.
