Detective Capt. George Busby feels assured of sixty affirmative votes. In response to a question- naire sent out by the Legion, sixty Senators, including Republicans and Democrats, stated positively that they would vote for the pending bill, though several reserved the right to offer amendments. Only thirteen Sen. ators have told the Legion that they would vote against the bonus. This leaves twenty-three who have not answered, and it is predicted by Tc- gion men that at least a half doz more will climb the band wagon wh the voting begins. To pass the bill it- self only forty-nine affirmative votes are needed, To pass it over a Presi- dential veto, sixty-four votes are needed, Curtously enough, Legion represen- tatives are confident President Hard- ing will not veto the bill. Senator James Watson of Indiana, an inti- mate friend and political adviser of the President, has publicly predicted that Mr. Harding would reverse him- self and sign the measure. Much significance is attached to the fact that although the President hinted that he would send a letter to Chair- man McCumber of the Finance Com- mittee expressing opposition to the bill he failed to do so. It is con- tended that if Mr. Harding intended to do anything about the Bonus Bill he would have acted while the meas- ure was in committee. The opposite impressioin {s held by others, who believe Mr. Harding is really anxious to get the measure out of committee and on the floor of the Senate, where he can again make an address urging postponement. The question is whether Mr. Harding, who knows what support the measure has, will risk a conspicuous turndown by the Senate or whether he will prefer this morning pictured the situation at this border point as considerably easier, Wt was deciared a truce on the Strabane-Lifford frontier agreed tampon at ten o'clock last night had {been observed, with communication by road between Lifford and Strabane re-established and traffic allowed to «flow to and from Free State territory. } ” © The Ulster special constables have | Ws evacuated Rough Island on Lough Erne, having found it untenable.
