By ' way of reminding us of this fact, Charlotte Greenwood swung into { the Vanderbilt Theatre last night, and, as she herself suggested, Managed to get along without stilts. For some time “Letty Pepper” seemed to cramp her free-and-easy style, but in the second act of this musical comedy she kicked the plot in the face and got into violent action with 5 her incredibly long arms and legs, to the great relief of others than herself. What Miss Greenwood needs more} = Ee MALL et than anything else on the stage !s room, her talents being essentially spacions. - Any shopgirl of her design who applied for a position in a de- partment store would probably be re- ferred to the architect of the building. Yet she succeeded fairly well in squeezing into Rose Stahi's old part in Charles Klein's serio-comic “Maggie Pepper,” remodelled somewat melo- dramatically by Oliver Morosco and George V. Hobart. Busy as she was banging on to her job, Letty found time to adopt a dear, sweet, fat Nittle girl, who had been a great help to her shop-lifting guardian, an ex- tremely nervous and untrustworthy character addicted to opium. This noble act, together with the astonisli- ing education of the shopgirl’s dar Ming at a Briarcliff school, might have passed almost unnoticed had it not heen for the ‘haughty and jealous fiancee of the young merchant. Keep- ing in mind ail that had gone before —as you should do in order to under- lively though conventional tunes. Jane and Mary King also warbled in- dustriously, and the chorus girls burst into song even during working hours. But the singing was never up to con- cert pitch. A fashion parade gave the girls a chance to look stunning. Little Frances Victory and Master Gabriel had a great deal to say, and the tall language they used made them a bit tedious. It was the tall Miss Greenwood, cavorting in her happy: lucky way, who furnished the only real amusement. THE BIG LITTLE FEN PETTY BP sca a ETT TI Lissen! Anyway, Letty didn't care, for by this time she had put the store on a paying basis and Sompletely won the heart of |ts sus- ceptible owner. It was then that Miss Greénwood gayly flung out her arms and legs |r sheer joy at release*from a plot thot for a moment had caused her to weep.
