‘HANGED, HE SAYS, IN FRENCH TOWN “flard-Boiled” Smith Smith Named in One Alleged Outrage by Watson Witness. YS MAJOR KILLED TWO Name of Officer Accused Does Not Appear on the Army ist, It Is Reported. WASHINGTO: Dec. 20.—George H. Taylor of Philadelphia, who served as a National Army man over- seas, told a Senate committee to-day that he saw with his own eyes twelve American soldiers hanged around Is- Sur-Tille, France, from April to June, 1918, but was unable to sy whether any of them had been convicted by court martial. Robert A. Harrison of Wilmingion, N, C., testified that in 1917 he wit- nessed the lynching in France of a soldier, The victim was a Mextcan from El Paso or Eagle Pass, Texas. Gen. Pershing’s Judge Advocate General in France, Col. Bethel, de- clared that in time of war court ma tial death sentences did not requie approval of the President. The case of a conscientious objector named Fry, who refused to carry his pack and who was killed by order of the guard, was brought up. “The man who killed the soldier was tried and acquitted,” Col. Bethel testified, t is our contention,” sald Senator Watson, “that ry was killed by sergeant who drove a bayonet through his heart.” “Does the record show that?” asked Senator Overman, Dem ocrat, North Carolina, ‘I think not,” Col. Bethel replied. Harrison told of another lynching efter the armistice which, he declared, was directed by “Hardboilea” Smith, The witness said he saw men taken tothe fiwing line without gas masks or guns as a form of punishment Pressed as to the cause of the lynch- ing, Harrison said the victim had been ordered by Smiih to sweep the stock- yard with a toothbrush, “and they had a little party when he refused.” “Were you court-martialled?” Sen- ator Overman, Democrat, North Caro- lina, asked, “Yes. The Colonel cursed me and I cursed him ‘back and be had me sent to the firing line after trial, His name? Col.
