HOUGH excel- 4 T tence of ma- terial is al- ways a preseribed element in clothes, there are times when it is more necessary than others, For in- Stance un elaborate and generous work- ing of hand embroid- ery on a frock might appear all right un « reasonably priced fabric, the hand ein- broidery being the main feature ano quite concealing the fabric, There are times also when ma- terials are combined im a way that ou overlaps or over- drapes the uther, making it possible for the under one to bea reasonably Priced texture which would in no way de- tract from the good effect of the gown \ On the contrary, however, a frock of “simple design de- pending on distinc- tion of cut and line, with but meagre trimming touches composed possibly or the, frock material fashioned into cord- ings or applied mo- tifs, the texture must be of the best, or it would be unethical to honor it in such a way. My design to-day makes a demand for an excellent quality satin or charmeuse of which the frock is 4 almost entirely made. Black, brown or dark blue would be appropriate with a bit of brick red Georgette revealed in the odd opening in the front of the bod- jee, and as a crush girdle. As an addea bit of elaboration, strands of jet beads © entwine thegirdle and dro» from an or- } pament down the front. The bodice ts im loose kimono fashion, and the skirt is straight with cascades down each ‘hip, which are nothing more than 5- inch extensions of the side seams. WAUKEGAN, IIL, Dec. 6.—Declaring that the Sangamon County Grand Jury which indicted Gov. Smal! and Vernon Curtis of Grant Park for embezzlement, conspiracy and operation of a confidence game was illegally formed, counsel for the Governor and his supposed bank- ing partner sought to have the Indict- ments quashed yesterday. Gov. Small was present as C. BH. Le Forgee, chief of his staff of lawyers, opened the arguments. Besides con- tending that the Grand Jury had been chosen illegally, Mr. Le Forgee argued that the indictment it returned was faulty in many particulars, and that it ed ‘an unfair and ‘unwarranted against the defendants. The hearing is expected to last a week. penceaias Siena SOUTHERN JURY CLEARS NEGRO. GOLDSBORO, N. By Frank H. Warren. The London String Quartet, Eng- land's own Flonzaleys, introduced a new quartet for strings last evening at its concert In Aeolian Hall, adding another novelty to the growing list. It was a ‘Threnody in E flat, three | movements, played without a break, the work of McEwen, a Scotch com- poser. The first section, bearing the legend “The Flowers o' the Forest,” is usually played by pipers at a funeral, the stated. Mr, McEwen appeared to be an unknown, but his quartet, a bit mountaneous in places b9 reason of be- ing a “Threnody,” fulfils its mission. A gentle Scotch air runs through it and the music fairly sighs. It was exquisitely played, as were the Mo- zart and Ravel quartets. Michel Hoffman, violinist, once an Auer pupil, exhibited his talents in Town Hall in the evening. He ts a good player with promise of finer things. Ernst's Concerto Pathetique was the keystone number of his pro- gramme. Adele Parkhurst, soprano, was heard in Town Hall in the afternoon. Old Italian, French and modern Eng- lish numbers made up her pro- gramme, Miss Parkhurst found her light voice most serviceable in quieter songs. Hor enunciation was clear, but lacked distinction, Phoebe Jefferson, pianist, her short skirt and bobbed hair effectively con- cealing her years, thought yesterday was the time to show her pianistic ability. The young, very young, lady was admired because of her fluent technique, her @ureness and her knowledge of light and shadow. She failed to find her proper place, how- ever, in Debussy’s “Children's Cor- ner." But she has plenty of time. Cecilia Guider, soprano, effected her debut in Carnegie Hall in the eve- ning | na concert for the benofit of disabled soldiers, for whose welfare Mrs. Guilder has devoted much of her time and talent. She sang old Ital- jan airs and the “Ritorna Vincltor” from “Aida” among other numbers. “Die Tote Stadt,” the opera that Marie Jeritza made famous, seemed to agree with the Monday night sub- scribers at the Metropolitan. It may have been the new prima donna rather than the opera's pleasantries that induced the audience to unbend, for Monday's patrons were having their first glimpse of their newest singing constellation, ‘The cast is becoming more at home in their parts, but Mr. Harrold’s tenor role still is laxing, and the various composers upon whom Mr, Korngold has called in his score grow more familiar.
