Kren = eB A RN West of Fifth Avenue 10 ACCEPT TITLE TO RSH BARONY Edmond, &c.,, Burke Roche - Decides to Assume Title by Becoming British Citizen. Nf Sn Edmond Maurice Burke Roche, the elder of the Roche twins, well known in the social life of this city, has decided to prove hia claim to the title of fourth Baron Fermoy and take his seat in the House of Lords as an Irish peer. Through the sudden death last September of his father, known in New York as James Boothby Burke Roche, Roche, but listed in the peer- age of Great Britain as the third Baron Fermoy, bis son Maurice in- herited the entalled Irish “and Welsh estates, honors and title. At first he sought to prevail upon his twin brother, Francis Burke Roche, to ac- Copt the title, but failing in this, de- cided to take it himself. Mr. Burke Roche's mother is Mrs. Fanny Work Burke Roche of this city, daughter of Frank Work. Sh« was married to the third Baron Fer- moy in 1880, They were divorced In 1896. No decision has yet been reached by Mr. Burke Roche as to when he will begin the legal steps necessary to the proving of his claim to the, f title, but it is likely he will do so when he goes abroad for the inter- national polo matches which are to be held in England in June." Assump- tion of the title will necessitate his renunciation of his American citizen- ship, but there is precedent for this in| the action of the Fairfax family of | Virginia, the head of which, Albert} Fairfax of this city, proved his claim | to the title and is now Baron Fair- fax in the peerage of Scotland. Of bis intended action, Mr. Burke Roche said: time to decide to accept the title borne by my father. I had hoped to| # perstiade my brother Francis to as- aume it, but this could not possibly be done. I must become a British sub- ject, naturally, put even if I remained an American I would still be Baron + Fermoy in the British peerage.” ‘The Barony of Fermoy is in County Cork, Ireland. The town of Féfnoy 4s noted for its large military bar- racks. The lands there and in Wales total about B00 anne acres, CONFESSES 15 ROBBERIES. Hertzog in Battle . at Polls. LONDON, Feb, §.—No leas vital an issue thin the secession of an important state of the British Empire by ballot arises in the election to-day of a new legislative assembly in the Union of South Africa. In England it is con- sidered that few more tmportant elec- tions have taken place in a British do- minion. Broadly, the question is whether South Africa, comprising the Provinces of the Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Transvaal and Orange Free State, shall continue its allegiance to thg King of England as one of the self-governing dominions of the Empire, or whether the South African Union shall set up as an inde- permient republic. At the head of the Loyalist section of the South African population of ap- proximately 6,000,000 is Gen. J.C. Smuts, former Boer General, now Prime Min- ister of the Union. ‘The Separatist Party is headed by Gen.
