US EPIDEMIC IS UNLIKELY HERE, QUARANTINE VIEW anton dans Disease Imported From Italy ‘Discovered in Time by Health Officers. SPREAD Ts IMPOSSIBLE. Ample Precautionary Measures Taken and New York Need Have No Fear. Maborate precautions are being taken by the heaith officers of the Port of New York to prevent the in- troduction into this country of typhus or other virulent diseases whioh are raging in @ number of Buropean countries, it was announced to-day by Dr. Leland 8, Cofer, inf charge at Quarantine. Dr. Cofer etated that his plans will be per- fected within a day or two and that there should be no need for worry by the American public of European scourges becoming rampant in this country. ‘The fear of an epidemic of typhus etarted with the discovery of pas- eengers in the steerage of the Presi- dente Wilson who bore symptoms of the dread disease. The vessel, which arrived Jast week from Trieste and Naples, had 1,060 passengers in her steerage. Of the suspected cases three have been identified as positive eases of typhus by the Quarantine doctors. ‘When it was suspected that typhus ‘was present on the Pres'dente Wilson, Dr. Cofer ordered that the vessel be taken from her South Brooklyn pier to the Quarantine Station and the 1,060 passengers were removed to Hoffman's Island, which is used by the Quarantine officials as a detention place for persons suspected of having contagious diseases. Until late last night the Hoffman's Island health force was occupied in giving the passengers anti-parasitic baths (delousing), and when the pas- sengers had been disposed of the members of the crew were put thfough the same process. The steerage pas- eengers and the members of the crew will be held under observation until Dr. Cofer and his assistants are con- vinoed that they are not affected with typhus. The cabin passengers on the Presi- dente Wilson had been permitted to land and go their several ways before the discovery of typhus symptoms in the steerage had been made. The health authorities, through the me-| dium of the passenger manifests— which in the majority of Instances contain the destination of passengers —are seeking to trace the where- abouts of the cabin voyagers, and the health authorities in the towns and cities to which they have proceeded will be warned to watch them and ascertain whether they have typhus symptoms. ‘The mattresses and bedding used by the steerage passengera on the Presidente Wilson have been removed from the ship and are being burned to-day by the Quarantine authorities. The ship ts also being thoroughly | fumigated. Dr. Cofer is perfecting arrange- ments for having his office provided with prompt information from abroad of typhus and other epidemics, so that whenever ships coming from such countries reach this port they will be held up until the doctors are assured that no contagion is present. ‘This ig the scason of the year for typhus, and Dr. Cofer says that he will not take any chances with ships from infected ports or countries. Rather than permit a single suspect- ed cage in getting ashore, Dr. Cofer says he will hold all the passengers until he is sure that they are not in- fected with the disease. The capacity of Hoffman's Island for suspects is about 3,000, but Dr, Cofer does not fear tbat its capacity will be much strained. If, however, it should be, he will hold suspects on board the ves- wel bringing them to this port. COLLEGE WOMEN FALL BELOW VENUS | Philadelphia Professor Says Con- trast Is Likely to Cause Us to Be Pessimistic. | PHILADELPHIA, Fob. 8.—The mod- ern woman college student is far below the physical standard of the Venus de Milo, says Dr. R. Tait McKenzie of the physical department of the University of Pennsylvania. The modern American youth, on the contrary, he says, has retained more of the classic Greek beauty of the human form. “If we compare the typical student of our women's colleges with the deep- chested, vital type that has come to us through the royal succession of Venuses like the Venue de Milo, we are apt to become pessimistic over the future of | the race," adds Dr. McKenzie. if = MeGibbon & Cn. 1 AND 3 WEST 37TH ST. Si-Ling Chi, little Chinese Princess, wandering in her garden, observed the strange movements of the caterpil- lars which fed upon the mul- herry trees. She discovered that the delicate filament encircling the cocoons which they made was a continuous thread, and that this could be woven into a gausy tissue far more beautiful than any- thing which had ever been seen. Thus a royal garden was the birthplace of that luxuri- ous fabric which has played so brilliant a part in the world’s history.
