| ie Hall last night. Rachmaninot ' Gives Recital; | The Flonzaleys By Sylvester Rawling. ACHMANINOFF, Russian com- poser-pianist, big enough to need no surname, gave a con- eert of music for the piano at Garne- His programme, unusual in many aspects, brought for- ward first the Bach-Busoni chaconne ‘Then came Schumann's “Papillons,” with which he hardly seemed in sym- pathy, playing much of it in almost a trivial vein. With the Beethoven @enata, opus 90, his mgod. changed, ané from theh to the end he poured forth a wealth of beauty and such fantasy that the crowded hpuse was subjugated and thrilled. To his Chopin group he added two waltzes, played with exquisite tex- cadenza of his own. Surnames were & minus quantity yesterday Poldowski, in parenthe- sis Lady Dean Paul, gave a recital at the Princess Theatre im the after- noon. Mme. Poldowski played the Piano, and Margaret Husten Carring- ton, soprano, and Murray Davey, tenor, sang, the latter in the place of Gervase Etwes, the eminent English singer, who met @ tragic death only a few days ago. The three furnished a charming salon entertainment, which does ‘not call for critical eom- ment. The atmosphere of the salon was so pervasive that an old friend of mine, a distinguished music critio, scarcely deigned to answer a simple question that I put to him 0 en- grossed he was in social observances. Arthur Shattuck, an American pianist, absent from the loal con- cert stage for a year or two, gave a ture of tone, and to Debussy's “Chil- dren's Corner’ his poetic interpre- tation imparted a glamor which it hardly possesses. Two preludes of his own were followed by his “Poli- tinelle,” and the C sharp minor pre- recital, at Aeolian Hall yesterday afternoon. His programme was strangely unconventional. A Bach- d'Albert toccata, a Bach-Bugsoni chorale and a Palestrina work, with which he began, were followed by un- familiar Compositions by Palmgren/IMETROPOLI ~ |TO-NIGHT at 8.15 .
